Machinery Pete: Middle-Aged Tractors

September 12, 2016 01:43 PM

Usually Machinery Pete looks at newer and older equipment, but he’s turning his attention to middle-aged tractors.

Older tractors in nice condition have been selling well at auctions, but the average auction price on the older models is falling this year due to an increase of older tractors.

An International 1086 sold on Sept. 2 at a farm auction in central Pennsylvania. The tractor with 6,468 hours sold for $16,000.

So far this year, the average price on a 1086 is $8,342, 11 percent down from last year.

John Deere 4440s are around 30 years old or older. A 1980 model had 2847 hours sold for $33,000 at a farm auction in central Minnesota, which is a strong price. On average, the auction price for a 4440 in 2016 comes in at $18,765, down 5.6 percent.
