With the 2017 season soon to be wrapping up, it’s time to get serious about planning for next season. How do you make the most of this important exercise? Add trusted, local expertise to your planning team.
As part of the planning team, your local agronomic advisor can help you determine if you’re developing the best foundation possible for increased ROI potential through effective weed, insect and disease control measures, plus in-season fertility that could help build profit in your corn crop.
Start with seed
To achieve extraordinary results for the season, you need to choose the right seed for your operation. Matching the right seed to each soil type at the right population plays a significant role in boosting yield potential and help reduce risk in your plan.
Your WinField United advisor offers access to a broad selection of tools that can help you choose the right seed for each field. Because CROPLAN® seed hybrids and varieties are rated on their performance across specific soil types, you can confidently select the product that matches each field’s conditions.
Your advisor can also provide data-based information about how hybrids and varieties respond to different plant populations in diverse growing environments. With easy-to-read charts, CROPLAN® seed helps you understand which varieties will be more effective at higher or lower populations, allowing you to push yield potential with high populations on your most productive acres and help reduce populations to save on input costs in less productive fields.
Optimize plant nutrition
Plant nutrition plans should be a key part of your seed selection discussion as well as in-season plans. Work with your advisor to match fertilization plans with your yield goals and application capabilities.
CROPLAN® seed response-to-nitrogen scores for each hybrid help you choose the right seed to optimize yield potential and get the best return from your plant nutrition investment.
In season, NutriSolutions 360® tissue testing between V4 to VT will provide a customized fertilizer recommendation that, if followed, could return the highest ROI of all the inputs applied for the season. Answer Plot® research has demonstrated that swapping out early season nitrogen with a late-season application can mean substantial yield improvements.* Your advisor can share data that shows how adding 50 units of nitrogen with appropriate combinations of potassium, sulfur and micronutrients could return additional profitable bushel potential per acre.
Add crop management plans
After seed is selected, your advisor can help you focus on getting as much yield potential as possible from each bag of seed. As you review last season’s results, work with your advisor to determine why some management steps worked well and others didn’t. For example, did yield suffer from an early flush of weeds that hampered early season crop growth? Maybe wet fields or another factor delayed your postemergence herbicide application, or other factors came into play.
If you’ve only been making postemergence herbicide applications, your advisor will likely recommend adding a preemergence application to your program to help prevent early weeds from negatively affecting yield potential and assist with providing more timing flexibility for your postemergence application. Your advisor can help you calculate the potential economic advantages of protecting yield with season-long weed control.
Insecticides and fungicides should also be discussed as part of planning to enhance yield potential. Make sure you’re prepared to protect plants from insect and disease threats as needed throughout the season.
Discuss ag tech tools
Whether you’re experienced with ag technology or just getting started, it’s important to understand all the capabilities and benefits these new tools are capable of adding to your program. Your advisor can help you evaluate the benefits of using precision seed and fertilizer technology, in-season imagery, field monitoring, and crop forecasting to help manage crops.
Ask your advisor to demonstrate the potential economic benefits associated with decision ag tools such as the R7® Field Forecasting Tool by WinField United on part of a field. The Field Forecasting Tool can be used to help make in-season decisions for increasing yield potential, and then compare the insights with your current practices to see if more value can be gained on those fields. Next season’s plans could also include a side-by-side trial with these tools on part of a field for a firsthand look at results.
Work with your advisor to include plans for monitoring each field’s progress and implementing real-time adjustments throughout the season. Capitalizing on opportunities to increase yield potential in-season helps provide a cost-effective way to add potential bushels to your program.
