Manage Risks to Better Position Your Farm

As the farm cycle begins to change, just as the seasons change, you need to prepare your farm. This special issue is designed to provide you with a broad perspective of what’s to come in 2014, as well as a few action items that you can implement to help your farm endure the new environment and take advantage of opportunities. The information is divided into four sections—business, markets, human resources and finance. Choose two or even three areas and focus on things you can control to better your business.

Every year, we have labeled this issue as the "Planning Guide," but I think "Guide to Risk Management" more adequately defines the material you’ll find in the following pages. Risk management is a two-step process. The first step is to determine what risks exist, and the second is to handle those risks in a way best-suited to your business objectives. According to A. G. Lafley, the former CEO for Procter & Gamble, you make your risk-management bed when you make your strategy choices. The article on page 8 should help you get into the strategic mindset.

The Top Producer team has called upon experts across the U.S. and asked them to identify the biggest threats to your operation. Not only will you read about these risks, but you’ll find Top Tips throughout the issue that will help you compete and stay ahead of the pack.
