Management Training for Young Farmers

November 4, 2010 04:40 PM

The new Tomorrow’s Top Producer program is a unique program targeted at three age groups of young farmers: Teens, Twenties and Thirties – each on their way to becoming a top producer and an integral part of agriculture’s future.

The numbers quantify the incredible need for educating and developing the next generation of farmers. According to U.S. Census Data and Farm Journal Media database research:
  • 40% of U.S. farms are poised to transition management, operation and or ownership to the next generation;
  • Only 10% of producers account for 85% of agricultural output – that equates to 209,000 farms producing the vast majority of agricultural output;
  • Of those top 10%, currently only 12,000 are under age 35 – less than 6% of commercial farms.
Some say that with so few commercial farms operating with farmers under 35, agriculture is doomed. It is critical that we teach young farmers how to manage opportunity and risk
Topics to be addressed at the Jan. 25 seminar in Chicago include Marketing, Succession Planning, Business management fine-tuning, estate tax and tax tips for 2011, crop insurance update, using social media to combat anti-agriculture and more!
