Meat Prices Set to Decline in Next Few Weeks

June 17, 2016 03:12 PM

Even though Father’s Day along with low prices should boost demand this weekend, meat prices are expected to head even lower in the next few weeks, Drover’s Editor Greg Henderson told AgDay.

“The key factor driving current prices is that packers are showing an even greater interest in quality grades, as a choice select spread is now at $23 to $24,” Henderson said, explaining that it is “both historically and seasonally wide.”

Two factors are driving the trend: shorter days on feed at feed yards, and a switch by retailers from select to choice store programs, according to Henderson.
