Meet America's Farmers 2015 Mom of the Year

Like many hardworking farm moms, Shelly Boshart Davis is an indispensable part of her family’s farming operation, SJB Farms. She grows grass seed, wheat, radishes, hazelnuts and bales grass straw near Albany, Ore. Davis got a bit of extra recognition this mother’s day for all that she does after being selected as Monsanto’s 2015 America’s Farm Mom of the Year.

Davis was one of five women recognized at the end of April as a regional finalist in this program. Along with Megan Seibel (Roanoke, Va.), Shelley Heinrich (Lubbock, Texas), Amy Kelsay (Franklin, Ind.) and Sara Ross (Minden, Iowa), Davis was honored for her dedication and commitment to family, farm, community and the agriculture industry.

Multiple people nominated Davis for the award. Janet Steele, president of the Albany Chamber of Commerce, points out that Davis’ experiences fuel her love for the industry and the future of her community.

“Most recently, Shelly has been on the forefront of trying to resolve the Northwest port crisis,” Steele says. “Helping her family runt heir business, Boshart Trucking, she learned firsthand the havoc the slowdown and closures have had on the ag industry and other businesses. She’s been a strong and vocal advocate, testifying at the state level and helping find a solution that will bring the ports back their full strength.”

Davis participates in the local Adopt-a-farmer program, consults with Oregon State University and speaks publicly at events about farming and agriculture.

“Shelly is a silent giant who walks amongst us all and never brings attention to herself,” says Greg Roe, CEO at United Way in Linn County. “She always has a hand out to help, give, do or listen. Her days are 16 hours on a normal basis, but she will take on more.”

Davis says of all the crops on the family’s diversified farm, her partnership with her husband, Geoff, and her three daughters are her “most important crop.”
