Meet Soil Nitrogen Halfway

Growers should evaluate the nitrogen in their fields under different soil conditions to determine how they can enhance fertility and keep corn yielding high.

"You’ve got to use all of the tools in the toolbox, and we’re using timing to help us with efficiency to manage loss and making sure the nitrogen’s there at the right time," says Farm Journal field agronomist Ken Ferrie in Episode 3 of Corn College TV Season 3. "But we also need to know, how do we pick the right rate? The right rate is managing loss and then trying to come up with some type of estimate of how much your soil’s going to give you. Then you have to make up the balance."

For example, a field on which 50 lb. of nitrogen has been applied might include one section where severe deficiency is occurring and another section that will push 200 bu./acre because it has soil with a higher mineralization rate.
