The Farm Family of the Week is the Nelson family of Fort Dodge, Iowa.
Dave Nelson and his wife Fonda returned to the farm after Dave decided to leave a career in sales with Ziegler Cat and Monsanto Company in both Iowa and Minnesota. Dave’s desire to expand the farm was enhanced by his father, Gary’s, experience.
When they decided to come back to the farm, there was not working capital or available acres to support two families on the Iowa farm. While his parents were supportive of his dream, there was not much aid they could give the two young entrepreneurs. The couple bought a supply company in Fort Dodge which allowed them diversity to balance risk and provided an additional source of income for land expansion. This also allowed his wife Fonda to put her good business and banking skills. They credit the retail business for improving their financial management on the farm as well.
The Nelsons now all farm together in the same area and Dave and Gary share labor and machinery. Dave does the precision planting and strip tillage and Gary manages spraying and combining. They split all of the sidedressing work.
The Nelsons have been chosen as the Farm Family of the Week because of their commitment to sound management and financial practices, their continued dedication to growth and their pledge to operate a farm that supports the dreams of the next generation.
