Millions of Dollars in Fencing Repairs Needed in Southern Plains

Producers in the southern Plains are still assessing damages caused by the wildfires that struck the area earlier this month.

Between labor and supplies in the communities, producers say repairing and rebuilding fences could cost millions of dollars.

“When you start to think about rebuilding fences, 461,000 acres, that’s 12,000 miles of fence,” said Greg Gardiner, co-owner of the Gardiner Angus Ranch in Ashland, Kan. “In this area, it costs approximately $8,000 to $10,000 a mile.”

Some producers say there are certain government parameters they need to figure out and follow when putting up new fences, causing that part of the recovery process to remain in limbo.
