Minnesota Dept. of Ag: Upcoming Nitrogen Management Forum

August 30, 2013 08:43 AM

Nutrient management has been put on the plates of farmers by the Environmental Protection Agency and a report earlier this week from U.S. Secy of Agriculture Tom Vilsack had the Secretary singing the praises of the voluntary effort thus far.

All states in the Mississippi River Basin are asked to devise independent strategies to reduce soil erosion and the flow of Nitrogen and Phosphates from fertilizer into the watershed. To that end, the Minnesota Department of Agriculture announces an upcoming open forum to discuss how Minnesota growers can get involved.

MDA to host Marshall listening session on Nitrogen Fertilizer Management Plan

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) is hosting a free public listening session to receive input on proposed revisions to the state's Nitrogen Fertilizer Management Plan. The Nitrogen Fertilizer Management Plan is a blueprint for prevention or minimization of the impacts of nitrogen fertilizer on groundwater in Minnesota.

MDA has been making revisions to the NFMP to reflect current activities, interagency water protection programs and implementation work, and to better align it with current water resource conditions and programs.

The listening session will take place on September 5, 2013 at the Marshall Public Library, 201 C Street, Marshall, Minnesota, from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. A short presentation will be given, followed by a question and comment period.

MDA is requesting comments on the 2013 plan. Comments will be accepted through November 1, 2013. More information can be found on MDA's website: www.mda.state.mn.us.
