Monsanto Research Facility Attacked

May 3, 2017 03:52 PM

Hidden by darkness, an attacker in Olmeneta, Italy hurled Molotov cocktails at a Monsanto Research Center. The late-night April 16 attack resulted in no injuries, but the resulting fire caused damage to the facility.

“The attacker launched four incendiary devices in total—two did not explode—and fled after spray painting a wall with ‘Bayer criminal marriage. No GMO,’” Science magazine reports.

The facility employs around 12 full-time staff and breeds maize for Italian customers. Damage from the fire spread to multiple buildings.

“For the record, we would like to state quite clearly that this facility, as is the case with all of our operations across Italy, has absolutely no activities involving genetically modified organisms,” says Charla Lord, Monsanto corporate engagement lead in a recent email statement to AgWeb.

The company says it’s cooperating with local law enforcement to bring perpetrators to justice. Currently no suspects have been named or taken responsibility for the attack.
