More Tips to Boost Employee Performance

  • Deal with problems sooner rather than later. Although workplace performance takes a huge hit when you have a laggard on your team, people are often reticent about correcting poor performance, says Bob Milligan, senior consultant with Dairy Strategies, LLC, and professor emeritus at Cornell University. “Supervisors who aren’t comfortable with people problems often let them slide,” he says. “Then it’s too late, they’re mad, and they come on way too strong.”


  • Respect helps. Florida dairy producer Michael Pedreiro has found that employees want respect and honesty from their employers. “When you do that, most become more engaged in their work, and when that happens, the employee’s performance naturally improves,” he says.


  • Seek employees’ ideas and input. Employees often can offer solutions you hadn’t considered. Build a culture where it’s comfortable for employees to come forward, Milligan recommends. Consider scheduling a meeting for employees to offer ideas. But give them time to think before holding the meeting.


  • Encourage employees to work together. “Giving examples of how improvement can be attained by working together has been helpful at my dairy,” says California’s Steve Nash.


  • Get to know your employees. The more you know them, the easier building relationships will be, says University of Idaho professor Mireille Chahine.


  • Increase their confidence. Many dairy workers are from lower socioeconomic backgrounds, Milligan says. Positive feedback is “a really powerful tool” that builds their confidence, he adds. Giving workers tools such as training and coaching will also boost employees’ confidence and help them succeed.
