Hubbard Feeds Introduces AllBite™ Block That Discourages Vice Behaviors
Hubbard Feeds, an Alltech company, has introduced a new nutritional solution for pig producers that influences pig behavior by adding a new stimulus to the environment, according to a company release. The AllBite™ block allows pigs to exhibit foraging behaviors and to bite and chew on the block instead of on their pen mates, reducing vice behaviors such as tail biting, ear biting and general aggression.
“Studies have shown that vice behavior in pigs, tail biting in particular, can be a behavioral response to the sight, smell and taste of blood,” says Dr. Andrew Bents, swine technical veterinarian at Hubbard. “The AllBite formulation provides a nutritional solution that includes functional ingredients known to calm pigs by enhancing their serotonin receptors and is an economical option for those looking to positively impact the welfare of their animals.”
AllBite’s molasses-based block, with a unique design and delivery system, attracts pigs and encourages them to chew on the block. Timely use of AllBite blocks can round out a sound animal welfare program, the release said.
“Changing diets to mitigate negative behaviors is a common practice, but in most cases, dietary changes are not implemented early enough to effectively prevent them,” says Jamie Pietig, senior swine nutritionist at Hubbard. “Also, most vice behaviors only affect a small group within a larger population. With its unique delivery system, AllBite provides a more reliable, cost-effective method by only supplementing the pens that exhibit vice behaviors.”
AllBite comes in a 23-pound, biodegradable container and is designed to be hung from the fence or the ceiling with a chain. Pigs are attracted to its design and soon begin chewing on the container and block. The AllBite block allows for a quick response immediately after tail biting or other vices manifest. The chain hanger reduces the possibility of the block getting pushed into a corner and ignored by the pigs and also keeps the product clean, increasing the likelihood that the pigs will continue chewing on the block.

Purina® EcoCare® Feeds Support Manure Management and Grow-Finish Pig Performance
Manure management isn’t a glorious job, but it’s a job that must be done. Purina® EcoCare® feeds, the only feed-through additive designed to reduce manure odors, make manure easier to handle and reduce manure volume while supporting grow-finish pig performance, according to a company release.
“EcoCare® feeds help manage manure without the additional step of mixing a pit additive,” says Emily Otto-Tice, Ph.D., senior nutritionist with Purina Animal Nutrition. “All you need to do is feed your pigs EcoCare®, and they’ll do the rest.”
Purina and its university partners have researched the benefits of EcoCare® feeds for more than 10 years. Studies showed a 40% reduction in ammonia emissions , 28% less nitrogen excreted in manure and an optimal ratio of nitrogen to phosphorus for use as fertilizer, 26% less manure produced when pigs were fed EcoCare® feeds in combination with DDGS2 and 33% less time needed to dissolve manure.
“No two grow-finish operations have the same needs,” Otto-Tice says. “EcoCare® feeds deliver a broad spectrum of benefits such as maintaining fresh air in barns, minimizing odor impacts on neighboring properties, maintaining manure storage and supporting pig performance. Together, these benefits add up to long-term business success.”
EcoCare® feeds are available in 2-pound (with or without phytase) or 5-pound paks to be mixed with grow-finish pig diets.

EveryPig Connects with AP Barn Controllers for Real-Time Data
EveryPig announced that its easy-to-use web-based platform now features real-time connectivity with AP (Automated Production) EDGE® Barn Controller units.
The new AP-EDGE® integration will automatically communicate water consumption and temperature data to EveryPig, a company release said. This technology will help caregivers who use the internet-enabled controllers to streamline their daily checkup process and save time since their barn data will be automatically entered into EveryPig’s system.
Water consumption fluctuation is often an early indication of a pig health problem. Having this information integrated into their EveryPig account, will enable field managers, veterinarians, and pig owners to identify pig health problems faster or even before pigs show signs of a problem.
“The new AP-EDGE® connectivity is another milestone in EveryPig’s mission to improve animal health,” says EveryPig founder Chris Bomgaars. “The water consumption and temperature data points received from barn controllers will help veterinarians, field managers and caregivers to spot health issues quicker. The connection will also speed up the learning process of our algorithms, enabling EveryPig to offer quicker AI-assisted responses when pigs start to get sick.”
Blake Berg, an Iowa farmer who was the first to ask for and implement the integration, says, “It’s exciting to be helping with new technology to better track information and to help with daily pig health.”
