Soil variability has been a limiting factor to maximum yields, and the agriculture industry has mitigated it through a variety of precision ag strategies, including zone management and variable-rate fertility, to-date.
The next step may be multi-hybrid planters. Several prototypes are already in development. And this week, Raven Industries, Inc., announced it is collaborating with Kinze Manufacturing to develop a new multi-hybrid planter control system. Raven introduced the first commercially available multi-hybrid planter solution this past summer. It is able to switch between two hybrids on the go.
Specifically, Raven is the technology provider for Kinze’s new 4900 series multi-hybrid concept planters. They will be tested with select North American producers this spring.
"Growers will quickly realize the benefits of a multi-hybrid system and the resulting ROI through the use of that technology," says Matt Burkhart, VP and general manager for Raven’s Applied Technology Division.
Also involved in the collaboration is Beck’s Hybrids, who will be providing their agronomic expertise during testing.
"Multi-hybrid technology allows corn planting to include precision hybrid placement," says Jason Webster, Central Illinois practical farm research director with Beck’s. "Placing the correct corn hybrid is one of the most important decisions a grower can make each and every year. Our multi-hybrid testing at Beck’s has shown significant yield gains and profitability by changing corn hybrid placement on the fly based upon varying degrees of yield potential throughout a field."
