October Dairy Cow Culling Up 1.9%

The United States Department of Agriculture reported 256,500 dairy cows were processed through federally inspected slaughter plants in October, up 1.9% over both September 2015 and October 2014 levels.

However, on a daily basis, cow slaughter was actually slightly lower this past October. Some 11,659 cows were processed in October 2015 compared to 10,948 cows in October 2014 and 11,990 cows in September 2015.

Year-to-date, cow slaughter is running 88,000 head higher than last year, for an increase of 3.8%. Cumulatively, 243,000 dairy cows have been sent to Hamburger Heaven so far in 2015.
