A plan to put 4,800 pigs on a farm in Shiawassee County, Mich., is drawing concerns about smells and water quality from nearby residents.
WILX-TV eports the pigs would go on a concentrated animal feeding operation in Fairfield Township. Owner Brian Washburn says the 80-acre operation will have two 100-by-200-foot barns and an open area for the pigs.
Mike Koyne, who lives about a mile from the site, says neighbors hadn't heard about the plan until someone saw a public notice next to the property. He says he'll get smells from the proposed operation, and that he's also concerned about animal waste contaminating groundwater.
Washburn says the proposal has been approved by the state Department of Environmental Quality. He says he lives in the community, too, and wouldn't harm it.
