Reviving A Childhood Dream To Become A Dairy Farmer

When Heather Moore was 9 years old, her family sold their small dairy. From that day on, she dreamt of starting her own dairy.

When Heather Moore was 9 years old, her family sold their small dairy. From that day on, she dreamt of starting her own dairy. After college she married her husband, a beef rancher, and together they started their own farm. Still, the desire to be back in the dairy business nagged at her. It wasn’t until their FSA loan officer suggested starting a dairy farm in 2014 that she truly thought that dream could become a reality.

Today, Moore milks 50 cows in a brand-new tie-stall barn. While the majority of their milk is shipped to a processor to make swiss cheese, a portion of it is sent to Wisconsin where it’s made into Moore Family Farms Cheddar. In addition to the dairy and running 800 stocker calves, Moore Family Farms has a small restaurant and specialty store in their small hometown of Maquoketa, Iowa.
