If there is one word that could sum up the 2019 growing season, almost all farmers would agree that it is WET. The trifecta of a harsh winter, a saturated spring and a late summer has wreaked havoc on crop fields across the nation. Another thing the rain filled forecasts have depleted besides crop yields? Bedding materials.
“We’ve already talked to some of our (straw) vendors,” says John Metzger, a dairy farmer from Kimmell, Indiana. “Some of them who we’ve bought straw from over the years don’t have any excess straw to sell.”
