Southern Growers: Ready Planters with the Corn College Crew

December 14, 2010 03:21 AM

Let Farm Journal Associate Field Agronomist Missy Bauer walk you through tuning your planter for peak performance from the hitch pin to the closing wheel. On January 18 near Tunica, Miss., Bauer heads south to help the southern grower fine tune their planter.

"When it comes to planter setup, there’s a lot to learn," she says. "Everyone’s interested in increasing ear count and taking yields to the next level."

The material will be inclusive of all planter makes and models. Key topics will include how to evaluate the soundness of your planter, how to set your planter for the best performance possible and planter attachments.

"We’ll cover the mechanics of planters in addition to the new technology you can use," Bauer says. "The sins of planting can haunt you through the entire season. The planter pass is one of the most important, if not the most important, passes you can make."

The practical, hands-on curriculum will extend beyond the planter pass as well. Bauer will discuss how to know a good stand when you see one, so that you can evaluate emergence and planter performance in your fields. The clinic will end with an open agronomic question-and-answer session with Bauer.

Early bird registration, at the discounted rate of $149, expires Dec. 23. Regular registration is $179, with $149 for each additional participant from the same farm.
