Supper on the Table

Supper on the Table

Every night when we sit down to supper, one in seven people in the world is hungry. Our children eat while others—here and around the globe—go without. Now, a Farm Journal Foundation initiative, Farmers Feeding the World, gives you a chance to change that.

“American farmers—who are truly feeding the world—have a long history of being generous and lending a hand to those who need it,” says Andrew J. Weber Jr., chairman of the Foundation. “Our farmers can and do provide enough for many. Working together, we can do even more.”

The Farmers Feeding the World grass-roots effort brings together farmers and all of American agriculture to feed those who are hungry. Every dollar makes a difference, whether it is $10 or $10,000, which one Farm Journal reader recently donated to our charity partner, Heifer International.

“We in agriculture are blessed,” says Kip Tom, a Leesburg, Ind., farmer who is helping to lead the nonprofit effort. “Farmers Feeding the World is an opportunity for us to give back—to lead the charge to make sure no one goes to bed hungry and to help educate consumers about the safe, abundant food we produce.”

By harnessing the generosity, willpower and expertise of American agriculture, our goal is to raise $20 million annually by 2012 from individuals, organizations and agribusinesses.

Those philanthropic funds will be devoted to two endeavors: putting food and the ability to grow food in the hands of the hungry, and educating the public on the importance of sustainable commercial agriculture.

With your assistance and everyone in the Farm Journal community, we hope to provide:

  • permanent hunger solutions for more than 140,000 people around the globe each year through respected agricultural development organizations such as Heifer International.
  • immediate assistance for 5 million people annually through relief organizations such as Feeding America.
  • education and outreach about the benefits of modern agriculture to more than 2 million nonfarm consumers each year.

Your tax-deductible donation is a unique opportunity to join fellow farmers in making a permanent difference without duplicating others’ efforts. The food relief will be provided through existing, respected organizations such as Heifer International. As a part of the educational outreach to consumers, the Foundation is producing television specials and creating a traveling exhibit that showcases today’s sustainable agriculture.

“None of us would think twice about lending a family member or friend $10 or $100 if you knew it would help him put food on the table,” Tom says. “This effort lets all of us do that, regardless of where we farm or what we raise. What’s more, for the first time we can pool our dollars with all of American agriculture to proclaim our trust and pride in U.S. farmers as they face the formidable task of feeding more than 9 billion people in the years to come.”

Supper needs to be on the table for each and every one of us, young or old. Please help make it happen.
