Quilt Store Revives Rural Town

Hamilton, Mo., has long been known as the birthplace of J.C. Penney. In fact, you can still come here to see his home and museum. But today, this rural community of 1,900 is better known for the Missouri Star Quilt Company, started in 2008 by the Jenny Doan family.

The company offers more than 30,000 bolts of fabric, hundreds of quilting patterns, quilt kits and a quilt magazine called Block. Every Friday, Doan posts a new quilting tutorial on the company’s YouTube channel.

”We currently have almost 60,000 subscribers, and the number of millions of viewers I don’t even know,” says Misty Doan. ”We also had people who wanted to come and visit us. We had this vision of creating a Disneyland for quilters, and we now have 12 stores here in town.“
