Take the Lead in Farm Business

"In the dog race of farming, if you’re not the lead dog, the view’s all the same," says Moe Russell, president of Russell Consulting.

The key for young farmers, Russell says, is to bulletproof your balance sheet. “If you have strong working capital, you’ll be in a great position to catapult ahead of competitors in hard times.”

Opportunities abound in agriculture, but with those opportunities come challenges. "To best manage your bottom line for the long term, you need to anticipate problems," Russell says. One way of making sure you'll be ready to ride out economic volatility is by analyzing your debt and building as much working capital as possible.

Russell, who has spent more than 30 years advising farmers on the business of farming, will share other insights at the Tomorrow’s Top Producer conference, June 16-17 in Nashville. His session, “Best Financial Practices for Young Top Producers,” will draw on his years of experience working with farmers across the country, as well as his own farming experience.
