The 2017 Census of Agriculture revealed both expected and surprising results. Released in mid-April, the 6.5 million data points shed light on the economics and demographics of the 3.4 million producers (up 7% from 2012) who operate 2.04 million farms and ranches (down 3.2%) and steward 900 million acres (down 1.6%). U.S. farms and ranches produced $388.5 billion in ag products in 2017, which is down $6.1 billion from 2012. Crop and livestock commodities each accounted for half of that total.
