In-Season Evaluations

Regardless of how your growing season is going, it’s smart to measure the health of your crop. A rescue nitrogen treatment might be necessary yet this year, or test results can guide changes for next year.

Nitrogen Deficiency

  • Look for V-shaped yellowing pattern on leaves from tip down to middle of leaf.
  • Deficiency starts at bottom of plant and moves up.

Soil Nitrate Test

  • Pull 0 to 1' and 1' to 2' samples in major soil types.
  • Broadcast N: Pull 8 random cores.
  • Banded N: Pull 4 cores across row in 2 spots.

Plant Tissue Test

  • Pull 15 leaves per sample in major soil types.
  • V7 to VT: Pull upper fully developed leaf.
  • R1 to R5: Pull ear leaf.

Stalk Quality

  • After silking through preharvest, spilt open the stalk in the middle to see how much has been cannibalized.
