“Although most discussions of heifer rearing begin with the newborn, instead, start with goals for heifers in their first or even second lactation,” says Dale Moore, with Washington State University. “This allows you to step back and examine each stage of heifer development to find the critical control points or the bottlenecks that might be holding them back.”
