There are apps aplenty in the agriculture industry. Now, pig farmers have a new app available that's made just for them.
The app, PigWise, is a barn-management tool from Zoetis. It allows operators to enter health data that is then uploaded to an online platform so production managers and/or veterinarians can work together to track herd health data. It also allows vets and others to compare and contrast treatment outcomes and resolve herd health issues in a timely manner.
“Prior to PigWise, standard recordkeeping in pig care has relied on paper systems, which limits the ability of producers and veterinarians to share health information quickly,” says Michael Senn, senior manager of Pork Technical Services at Zoetis. “The ability to access performance data in real-time helps veterinarians assess any disease outbreaks quickly, resulting in better treatment outcomes.”
Senn says users can set up alerts to notify them when specific scenarios occur. It also allows them to track medication use. They can select treatment options to review approved dosages, withdrawal times and routes of administration. Senn says it reinforces his company’s commitment to responsibly used antibiotics.
“Properly identifying and treating sick animals with the correct medications are keys to helping maintain the effectiveness of these important resources,” he says. “A practical means of recording treatment can help producers use antibiotics responsibly and adhere to withdrawal times.”
