Trade Tension Creates Basis Woes For Northern Plains Farmers

October 8, 2018 11:14 AM

The agricultural industry is watching in anticipation for the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) October Crop Production report. The report is expected to reveal updated answers on the size of the U.S. corn and soybean crop.

Despite the numbers, trade tension is changing the normal flow of grain. Disruptions are hurting basis and cash prices, especially in the Northern Plains.

AgDay national reporter Betsy Jibben talks with Kris Kavan, a farmer from Cedar Bluffs, Nebraska; Mike Maguire, a Logan, Iowa farmer; Luke Lauritsen, a farmer from Arlington Nebraska; Mike Schropp, a Crescent, Iowa farmer; John Prauner, Senior Commodity Trader with Hansen-Mueller and Joe Vaclavik, Senior Commodity Trader with Standard Grain.

Not sure we can expect good prices when the #1 buyer of exports on beans goes AWOL. Since this is a political move & decision by the Trump administration, then they better be prepared to support the "Patriotic" American Farmer for the next several years or until we can find new markets because I don't see where $10 or even $9.50 cash beans are returning anytime soon. Keep sending the $1.65 on an annual basis, then maybe my family can survive another year. (But I rather have the market's do the work as none of us want govt handouts). Donald Trump might be "Making America Great Again" but it has come at a multi-year cost to the American Farmer. Basis is bad around here but I really feel for the families in the north-west.

The problem is the world is controlled by “bean COUNTERS” - that don’t know beans about beans. They don’t know good beans from bad, how to plant them, harvest them, make better ones, protect them, how to transport them or how to store them. What is worse is they don’t care to learn - actually all these politicians (especially Mr. “trade wars are easy to win”) do care about is whatever increases their own wealth, their own power and their own egos.

Trump is a PSYCHOTIC IDIOT, LYING CONMAN!!! No more, no less. He always lies, even when he doesn't need to. He has unbelievably fooled people that I did not think intellectually possible!!! It is truly the fact that some people only hear, and listen to what they want to hear. Even when they no it's not true, and factual.
