Tymoshenko Attorney Detained and Questioned

November 11, 2013 09:59 AM

Jailed former Ukraine Prime Minister is at the center of talks aimed at Ukraine's entrance into the European Union. The E.U. has been clear that Tymoshenko must be released as a condition of Ukraine's inclusion into the E.U. But a new wrinkle in this tale suggests President Yanukovich still holds a grudge against Tymoshenko.

Word comes today that Tymoshenko's primary attorney has been detained and is currently under investigation for abusing his wife. Attorney Serhiy Vlasenko has been the voice of Tymoshenko during her imprisonment, visiting her in prison and reporting her condition to the outside world.

Now is not the time for Ukraine to play bully with Mrs. Tymoshenko as a meeting scheduled for November 28th & 29th will determine if Ukrainian reforms have gone far enough to warrant an entrance into the European Union.

Reuters reports Vlasenko texted today, "Repression is increasing." Many believe the attorney's arrest is part of the malice the Yanukovich Administration holds against the former Prime Minister who negotiated a deal with Russia for natural gas takeaways that Yanukovich says was outside of her authority as Prime Minister.

Vlasenko has not yet been arrested officially -- but is being held at a prosecutor's office and questioned. With an international summit aimed at human rights reforms just two weeks away, the arrest of Tymoshenko's attorney may signal Ukraine has no interest in joining the European Union. That would align that nation with Russia, who is assembling its own trade union, and has courted Ukraine for membership.
