Washington, DC (May 17, 2012) – The Farm Journal Foundation is pleased to add U.S. Representatives Jo Ann Emerson (R-Mo.) and Leonard Boswell (D-Iowa) to the list of bipartisan policymakers who are voicing their support for the Farmers Feeding the World initiative.
In a statement, Rep. Emerson, member of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Agriculture, said, "The obvious intersection between American agriculture and efforts to combat hunger around the world are a point of pride for producers in Missouri and all over the country. I can’t tell you how important it is to our agricultural community to give back – whether they are exploring new markets for our safe and affordable ag products around the world, on mission trips to bring irrigation to a farming community in an impoverished part of the world, or contributing to programs that reach millions of Americans who struggle with hunger right here at home. Partnerships like Farmers Feeding the World also tell the American people that their support for U.S. agriculture is well-placed. We are feeding the world with the produce from American farms and ranches, and that is a worthy aspiration for a community that works so hard, takes on enormous risks, and puts its heart into our food supply season after season."
In addition to her unwavering support for farmers and ranchers, especially those in Missouri’s 8th district, Emerson is also a well-known hunger advocate, serving as co-chair of the Congressional Hunger Center. Supporting Farmers Feeding the World is just another example of her commitment to America’s producers and the world’s hungry.
Rep. Boswell, ranking member of the House Agriculture Subcommittee on General Farm Commodities and Risk Management, represents Iowa’s 3rd district and helps operate his family’s farm. As one of the senior Democrats on the committee, Boswell has helped shape three farm bills.
In support of Farmers Feeding the World, Boswell recently released a statement commending the campaign and its efforts. "Food production is a critical component of our nation’s economy and a key passion in our humanitarian goals. The Farmers Feeding the World initiative is among those leading the effort to combat world hunger by providing needed solutions to those facing food shortages around the globe," Boswell said. "I commend their hard work promoting production agriculture and sustainable farming practices through which millions are fed each day."
"Given the many challenges facing our country, it will take political courage and a real understanding of modern agriculture’s place in the world to successfully address the global and domestic hunger epidemic," said Charlene Finck, Farm Journal Foundation president. "I am encouraged by leaders like Representatives Emerson and Boswell, who stand behind American agriculture’s effort to do its part to fight hunger through Farmers Feeding the World."
