USDA: Cold Front Moving Across Plains

January 11, 2012 03:47 AM

USDA's Joint Ag Weather Facility says wind advisories are in effect in the Plains. Northerly wind gusts in excess of 50 mph are occurring across the northern and central Plains in the wake of a strong cold front’s passage. Behind the front, this morning’s low temperatures fell to near 0°F on Montana’s High Plains. A few snow showers accompany the blast of cold air across the northern Plains.

In the West, USDA says warm, dry weather persists from California to the Rio Grande Valley, but cooler air is overspreading areas farther north. Precipitation is confined to the central Rockies, in the vicinity of a cold front.

In the Corn Belt, USDA says mild, dry weather prevails in most areas. "However, rain is spreading into the Ohio Valley, while a strong cold front is entering the upper Midwest. Snow showers are developing in the vicinity of the cold front, while very windy, sharply colder conditions trail the front," it adds.

In the South, USDA says dry weather has returned to the western Gulf Coast region, but drought-easing showers and thunderstorms are spreading across the southern Atlantic States. "Significant rain is also falling in parts of Tennessee and Kentucky," it says.

In its outlook, USDA says a low-pressure system over the interior Southeast will reach the lower Great Lakes region by Thursday. Additional rainfall totals of 1 to 2 inches can be expected from the Ohio Valley and the southern Appalachians into the Northeast. "A strong cold front will interact with the low-pressure system on Thursday and Friday, resulting in a change to locally heavy snow from the Great Lakes region into New England. Elsewhere, mostly dry weather will prevail into early next week," it predicts. "By week’s end, temperatures will quickly rebound to above-normal levels across the western and central U.S., but chilly conditions will persist through the weekend in the East. Another surge of cold air will arrive early next week across the northern Plains and the Northwest."
