USDA Announces Old- and New-Crop Soybean Sales

March 5, 2013 02:06 AM

Private exporters reported to the U.S. Department of Agriculture the following activity:

  • Export sales of 345,000 metric tons of soybeans to China during the 2013/2014 marketing year; and
  • Export sales of 330,000 metric tons of soybeans to unknown destinations during the 2012/2013 marking year.

The marketing year for soybeans began Sept. 1.

USDA issues both daily and weekly export sales reports to the public. Exporters are required to report to USDA any export sales activity of 100,000 metric tons or more of one commodity, except 20,000 tons for soybean oil, made in one day to one destination, by 3:00 p.m. Eastern time on the next business day following the sale. Export sales of less than these quantities must be reported to USDA on a weekly basis.

Juli says: Of particular note is the old-crop sale as traders suspect it is for China and signals the window of opportunity for U.S. exports remains open a bit longer than usual. However, this means the tail on Brazilian exports will be long. But for now, the U.S. remains the most reliable supplier of soybeans on the globe due to long waits on Brazilian ports.
