USDA Mulling Final Corn Planting Date Extension in Some States

Heavy rains inundating the U.S. Midwest have prompted rumblings that USDA is considering an extension of the final planting dates for corn relative to the federal crop insurance program, with Iowa and Missouri said to be two of the states where the action is being considered, according to sources.

Currently, Iowa has a final planting date for the crop insurance program of May 31 - today - while some areas of Missouri have already seen that date pass - May 25 - while northeast Missouri also has a May 31 final planting date for corn as shown in the accompanying map.

Of note also given the forecast ahead for the weekend are final corn planting dates of June 5 for Indiana and most of Illinois.

Comments: As of May 28, USDA reported that 89 percent of corn was planted in Illinois, 85 percent in Iowa, 83 percent in Missouri and 86 percent in Indiana.
