DECEMBER 27-28, 2014

HEADLINES:
WELCOME TO U.S. FARM REPORT. I'M TYNE MORGAN, AND HERE'S WHAT WE'RE WORKING ON FOR YOU. IN JOHN'S WORLD, JOHN HAS HIS SIGHTS SET ON RUSSIA...SPEAKING OF NEXT YEAR, OUR MARKETING ROUNDTABLE TAKES A LOOK BACK AT WHAT WE LEARNED IN 2014 AND HOW TO PREPARE FOR ANOTHER VOLATILE YEAR, AND PAYING TRIBUTE TO A CROP THAT'S THE FOCUS OF A MAJOR CHRISTMAS SONG. FROM CHESTNUT PRODUCTION TO A RED BARN RIPE WITH TRADITION, IT'S OUR ANNUAL CHRISTMAS IN THE COUNTRY SPECIAL.
TRADE PARTNERSHIPS:
NOW FOR THE NEWS, AG SECRETARY VISLACK IS OPTIMISITC ABOUT TRADE PARTNERSHIPS AND WHAT IT COULD DO FOR DEMAND IN COMING YEARS.
TTIP:
MEANWHILE, A MAJOR TRADE DEAL WITH EUROPE IS STILL PENDING. THE TRANSATLATIC TRADE AND INVESTMENT PARTNERSHIP, OR T-TIP, ORGINALLY HELD A DEADLINE OF 2015. BUT THE DEAL THAT WOULD CUT TARIFFS AND REGULATORY BARIFFS ON ITEMS LIKE AGRICULTURAL GOODS, MAY HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL THE PRESIDENTAL ELECTION IN 2016. THIS IS IN BRUSSELS. PROTESTORS, INCLUDING SMALL FARMERS, SAY THE DEAL WOULD DESTROY SMALL PRODUCTIONS BY ALLOWING OUTSIDE COMMODITIES IN. SUPPORTERS IN THE E-U FEEL THE OPPOSITE, CLAIMING IT COULD BOOST LAMB AND VENISON EXPORTS TO THE U-S.
BEEF OUTLOOK:
THE RECORD BREAKING CATTLE AND BEEF PRICES COULD SPILL OVER INTO THE NEW YEAR.
THAT'S ACCORDING TO USDA'S OUTLOOK FOR BEEF PRODUCTION NEXT YEAR. THE AGENCY SAYS RECENT SLAUGHTER NUMBERS ARE BELOW WHAT YOU TYPICALLY SEE IN A EXPANSIONARY PHASE OF A CATTLE CYLE. SO THE AGENCY SAYS THIS SUGGESTS CURRENT HIGH PRICES ARE JUST TOO MUCH TO RESIST. SO, COW-CALF PRODUCERS ARE HAVING A HARD TIME RETAINING HEIFERS FOR BREEDING...
JOHN’S WORLD:
ONE OF THE DUBIOUS ADVANTAGES OF OUR TIME IN HISTORY IS THE ABILITY TO WATCH WORLD EVENTS UNFOLD MORE OR LESS IN REAL TIME. FOR EXAMPLE, I HAVE BEEN FASCINATED BY THE RUSSIAN ECONOMIC MELTDOWN AND THANKS TO TWITTER AND GLOBAL NEWS REPORTING CAN FOLLOW IT 24/7 IF MY ATTENTION SPAN WOULD HOLD OUT. THE OBVIOUS SOURCE OF RUSSIA'S ECONOMIC CRISIS IS PLUMMETING OIL PRICES, BUT ECONOMIC EXPERTS ALSO POINT OUT THE SANCTIONS BY THE U-S AND EUROPE ARE BIG FACTORS AS WELL. THIS BRINGS ME, STRANGELY ENOUGH, TO SOME WORDS ABOUT PREDICTIONS FOR 2015. WHEN PUTIN INVADED CRIMEA AND UKRAINE EARLIER THIS YEAR, THERE WERE DIRE FORECASTS OF THE CONSEQUENCES IF THE WEST DIDN'T RESPOND FORCEFULLY AND IMMEDIATELY. ALMOST NOBODY WAS SATISFIED WITH THE DLEIBERATE AND MEASURED REACTION BY THE U-S AND EUROPEAN ALLIES. BUT LOOKING AT THE SITUATION NOW, NOT OVERREACTING SEEMS TO BE WORKING PRETTY WELL. WHETHER RUSSIA PULLS OUT COMPLETLEY REMAINS TO BE SEEN, BUT THEIR HAMSTRUNG ECONOMY SUGGESTS IMPERIALISTIC ENTHUSIASM MIGHT WANE. WHAT WE FORGET, AGAIN AND AGAIN, IS BAD ACTIONS TEND TO SOW THE SEEDS OF THEIR OWN DESTRUCTION. PROXY WARS LIKE THE UKRAINE CONFLICT HAVE NEVER WORKED PARTICULARLY WELL. MEANWHILE, INCREASINGLY GLOBALIZED ECONOMIES ARE VERY VLUNERABLE TO INTERRUPTION OF TRADE. THE IMPULSE FOR INSTANT RETALITATION IS A HUMAN CHARACTERISTIC, BUT ONE BEST KEPT UNDER CONTROL. AS UNDRAMATIC AS ECONOMIC SANCTION SEEMED, MY GUESS IS THEY WILL PROVE TO HAVE BEEN A WISE DECISION, ESPECIALLY COMPARED TO MILITARY OPTIONS. SO WHEN THE LIST OF PREDICTIONS FOR 2015 POUR OUT THIS WEEK, NOTICE HOW MANY SEEM TO DEMAND IMMEDIATE AND DRASTIC ACTION. THEN TAKE A BREATH AND WATCH PUTIN TRY TO DIG OUT OF A VERY DEEP HOLE.
HELLO:
MERRY CHRISTMAS! AND WELCOME TO CHRISTMAS IN THE COUNTRY. I'M TYNE MORGAN.
AND I'M CLINTON GRIFFITHS. OVER THE NEXT 30 MINUTES, WE'LL BRING YOU STORIES OF THE SEASON. SOME WILL ENTERTAIN, OTHERS WILL ENLIGHTEN...AND THEY WILL ALL GIVE YOU REASON TO CELEBRATE.
BARN:
THE BIG BEAUTIFUL RED BARN WE'RE STANDING NEAR IS OWNED BY THE ST. JOSEPH COUNTY INDIANA PARKS SYSTEM. IT ORIGINALLY SERVED A LOCAL CATHOLIC ORDER - THE SISTERS OF THE HOLY CROSS. THIS YEAR IT WAS ADDED TO THE NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES. WE'LL GIVE YOU A TOUR OF THIS MAGNIFICENT BARN LATER IN THE SHOW.
ROCKEFELLER CHRISTMAS:
TEASE:
NEXT WE'LL PAY TRIBUTE TO ONE OF THE MOST POPULAR CHRISTMAS SONGS OF ALL TIME - AS IT STIRS UP IMAGES OF ROASTING AN OFTEN-FORGOTTEN TREE NUT, AND LATER, JOHN PHIPPS SHARES HIS MESSAGE OF THE HOLIDAY SEASON.
GREAT AM BARNS:
THIS PICTURESQUE RED BARN HAS BECOME RATHER FAMOUS IN THIS PART OF NORTHERN INDIANA. IT WAS ADDED TO THE NATIONAL REGISTRY OF HISTORIC PLACES JUST THIS YEAR.
IT HAS QUITE A STORY TO TELL. IT WAS ONCE OWNED BY THE SISTERS OF THE HOLY CROSS. THE CATHOLIC ORDER HAS BEEN SERVING THE COMMUNITY SINCE THE 1840'S. PART OF THEIR MINISTRY INCLUDED THE CONSTRUCTION OF A SCHOOL - WHICH GREW INTO SAINT MARY'S COLLEGE.THE ORDER HAD ITS OWN FARM TO FEED THE NUNS AND STUDENTS FOR GENERATIONS. AND THOUGH THE SISTERS NO LONGER OWN THE FARM, THE LIVESTOCK BARNS STILL STAND AS A TESTAMENT TO THEIR MINISTRY...
CAPITAL ARRIVAL:
DURING THE WINTER MONTHS - IF THERE'S ENOUGH SNOW - THE PARK OPERATES A TUBING HILL AND CROSS COUNTRY SKIING. PEOPLE RENT THOSE ITEMS OUT OF THIS BARN. MEANWHILE…THE CAPITOL CHRISTMAS TREE CONTINUED ITS LONG JOURNEY TO THE NATION'S CAPITOL.
TEASE:
THANK YOU FOR JOINING US. WE HOPE YOU ENJOYED OUR CHRISTMAS GIFT TO YOU.
AND AS 2014 COMES TO A CLOSE, WE THANK YOU FOR SPENDING TIME WITH US EACH AND EVERY WEEK.FROM OUR FAMILIES TO YOURS, WE WISH YOU A MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HEALTHY AND PROSPEROUS 2015.
