TODAY ON USFR
DECEMBER 6-7, 2014

HEADLINES:
WELCOME TO U.S. FARM REPORT. I'M TYNE MORGAN, AND HERE'S WHAT WE'RE WORKING ON FOR YOU. A YEAR OF SURVIVAL? OUR MARKETING ROUNDTABLE IS ON LOCATION FROM EXECUTIVE WOMEN IN AGRICULTURE. WE GET THE RESPONSE TO ONE BANK'S GRIM OUTLOOK FOR 2015 WORKING IN A MAN'S WORLD. WHAT IT'S LIKE TO BE A FEMALE FARMER. HOW TO OUTWIT A COWBOY... BAXTER BLACK HAS A COWGIRL'S STORY, AND FROM THE FARM...
CHINA AUSTRALIA DAIRY:
THE COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE IN TRADE WITH CHINA IS GAINING STEAM. THROUGH A FREE TRADE AGREEMENT, CHINA SAYS IT WILL REMOVE IMPORT TARIFFS ON BEEF AND DAIRY PRODUCTS FROM AUSTRAILA. CURRENTLY, DAIRY TARIFFS ARE AS HIGH AS 20 PERCENT FROM AUSTRALIA...TARIFFS ARE EVEN HIGHER ON BEEF-- RANGING FROM 12 TO 25 PERCENT. AND THOSE WILL BE REMOVED OVER 9 YEARSS. CHINA IS THE LARGEST DAIRY IMPORTER, ACCOUNTING FOR 30 PERCENT OF GLOBAL PURCHASES.
RUSSIA NATURAL GAS:
AND IN A SURPRISE MOVE OUT OF RUSSIA, PRESIDENT VLADIMIR PUTIN HAS SCRATCHED PLANS FOR A MAJOR NEW NATURAL GAS PIPELINE IN EUROPE. ANALYSTS SAY THE PIPELINE WOULD HAVE INCRASED RUSSIAN POLTICAL INFLUENCE OVER SOUTHEASTERN EUROPE AND DETOURED NATURAL GAS AROUND UKRAINE PUTIN SAYS INSTEAD, RUSSIA PLANS TO BUILD A SMALLER PIPELINE TO TURKEY. CONSTRUCTION ON THAT BEGAN TWO YEARS AGO AND WILL TRANSPORT LARGE QUANTITIES OF RUASSIAN GAS UNDERNEATH THE BLACK SEA TO EUROPE.
TEASE ONE:
THANKS, MIKE. THIS WEK FARM JOURNAL HELD ITS ANNUAL EXECUTIVE WOMEN IN AGRICULTURE CONFERENCE IN CHICAGO, ILLINOI.S THIS YEAR, THE CONFERENCE DREW IN WOMEN FROM 29 STATES. DURING THE EVENT I HOSTED AN ALL-FEMALE MARKETING ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSION, FOCUSING LARGELY ON 2015. WE'LL HAVE THAT CONVERSATION RIGHT AFTER THE BREAK.
JOHN’S WORLD PITCH:
AS YOU JUST SAW, THE EXECUTIVE WOMEN IN AGRICULTURE CONFERNECE THIS WEEK DREW LIKE-MINDED BUSINESS WOMAN FROM ACROSS THE COUNTRY. TODAY, THERE ARE STILL SOME STEREOTYPES ABOUT FEMALE FARMERS. BUT AS JOHN PHIPPS TELLS US, SUCCESS ON THE FARM ISN'T ABOUT PHYISCAL STRENTH. JOHN.
JOHNS WORLD:
ONE OF THE LAST DEFENSES OF MALE-DOMINATED PROFESSIONS LIKE PRODUCTION AGRICULTURE IS THE NEARLY UNIVERSAL DOGMA THAT FARMING WAS TOO HARD FOR WOMEN BECAUSE OF UPPER BODY STRENGTH REQUIREMENTS. IT WAS NOT WITHOUT SOME JUSTIFICATION - MUCH OF FARMING WAS MUSCLE-POWERED AND EVEN SMALLER MEN OFTEN FELT HANDICAPPED IN A WAY WHEN SO MUCH OF THE TIME AND EFFORT WAS SPENT FIGHTING GRAVITY AND INERTIA.BUT MACHINERY MANUFACTURERS DISCOVERED TWO SEPARATE TECHNIQUES TO EXPLOIT THE HYPOCRISY OF THIS BELIEF. FOR INSTANCE, THOUGH FEW OF YOU REMEMBER, THE INTRODUCTION OF POWER STEERING WAS ROUNDLY DERIDED AS SIGN OF MORAL DECAY AND PHYSICAL SOFTNESS. AND WE COULDN'T ADD IT FAST ENOUGH TO OUR GIANT STEERING WHEELS. IN FACT, MACHINERY ENGINEERS RAPIDLY DISCOVERED AN ENORMOUS MARKET APPETITE FOR COMFORT AND EASE OF OPERATION. HOWEVER, IT SHOULD BE NOTED THEY NEGLECTED TO MENTION OPERATORS COULD CONSUME FAR FEWER CALORIES WITH THE ADDITION OF THESE MECHANICAL ASSISTS.THE SECOND TACTIC WAS SUBTLER. AS MACHINERY GREW LARGER AND LARGER, REPAIRS EXPANDED FROM SOMETHING FEASIBLE WITH A CRESCENT WRENCH AND PLIERS TO REQUIRING ¾" IMPACT WRENCHES AND 5 TON OVERHEAD CRANES. MANY OF HAVE DISCOVERED WE DIDN'T POSSESS SOCKETS BIG ENOUGH TO WORK ON A NEW TRACTOR, LET ALONE POSSESS THE OOMPH TO LOOSEN FACTORY-TORQUED BOLTS. AFTER ALL THE MOBILE REPAIR TRUCK COULD BE HERE IN A HALF-HOUR AND THEIR FINGERS COULD BE SACRIFICED BETWEEN TWO MASSIVE SLABS OF STEEL. ADD IN ELECTRIC OVER HYDRAULICS, MICROPROCESSORS ANTICIPATING OUR EVERY MOVE, AND SUDDENLY WE CAN HAVE DAYS OF ACRE-EATING PRODUCTIVITY WHILE BARELY BUDGING FROM OUR CLIMATE-CONTROLLED LEATHER SEATS. NOW THE ENERGY EXPENDITURE SAVED CAN BE REINVESTED IN OTHER TASKS LIKE INFORMATION ANALYSIS AND FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT, BUT THAT SHIFT IS NOT OCCURRING AS RAPIDLY AS YOU MIGHT THINK. SO THE NEXT TIME SOMEONE DISMISSES THE IDEA OF REAL FEMALE FARMERS BY SAYING THE JOB STILL REQUIRES LOTS OF UPPER BODY STRENGTH, REMIND THEM THAT WHILE TRUE, TODAY IT MOSTLY REFERS TO THE UPPER 10%.
HEADLINES:
WELCOME BACK. WE HAVE MUCH MORE AHEAD THIS WEEKEND. IN OUR FARM JOURNAL REPORT - WHY ONE FEMALE FARMER SAYS BOOKWORK ISN'T HER FORTE.  TRACTOR TALES, A POETIC TRIBUTE TO PLOWING OUTDOORS. BAXTER BLACK SHOWS US HOW A COWGIRL CAN OUTWIT A COWBOY, AND IN CUSTOMER SUPPORT, ONE VIEWER DOESN'T SEE EYE TO EYE WITH JOHN ON NET NUETRALITY.
TAX EXTENDERS:
NOW FOR THE HEADLINES...FARMERS LOOKING FOR A LITTLE TAX BREAK IN BUYING BIG TICKET ITEMS THIS YEAR   MAY GET THEIR WISH.
SOUTH KOREA AND MOUTH:
A SOUTH KOREA HOG FARM HAS A NEW CASE OF FOOT AND MOUTH DISEASE.ACCORDING TO REUTERS, THE FARM IS SOUTHEAST OF SEOUL.THE AG MINISTER SAYS NEARLY 16 THOUSDAND HOGS AT THE FARM WILL BE SLAUGHTERED.
NEW JERSEY PORK:
NEW JERSEY PORK PRODUCERS WON'T BE REQUIRED TO REMOVE GESTATION CRATES FROM FARMS.EVEN THOUGH PORK PRODUCTION IS SMALL IN THE STATE; GOVERNOR CHRIS CHRISTIE VETOED THE BILL, SAYING IT WAS QUOTE, A SOLUTION IN SEARCH OF A PROBLEM. CHRISTIE THINKS THE DECISION TO BAN GESTATION STALLS SHOULD BE LEFT UP TO THE STATE'S BOARD OF AGRICULTURE, NOT LEGISLATORS.
WEATHER PITCH:
THAT'S IT FOR NEWS...WE NOW HEAD OVER TO VISIT WITH METEOROLOGIST MIKE HOFFMAN. MIKE, LAST WEEK YOU GAVE A WINTER OUTLOOK. A COUPLE VIEWERS DIDN'T LIKE WHAT YOU HAD TO SAY.
FEMALES FARMERS:
WHEN YOU GO TO FARM SHOWS, OR MAYBE A LOCAL COUNTY AG MEETING, YOU CAN SEE THE MAJORITY OF FARMERS ARE MALE.  THE NUMBERS TELL THE STORY-- THE LATEST AG CENSUS SHOWED CURRENTLY, 14 PERCENT OF FARMERS ARE FEMALE. THAT'S A TWO PERCENT DROP FROM THE LAST CENSUS TAKEN IN 2007.BUT FEMALE FARMERS ARE OUT THERE IN THIS FARM JOURNAL REPORTER, NATIONAL REPORTER BETSY JIBBEN SHOWS US WHY FOR ONE WOMAN, BOOKWORK ISN'T HER FORTE... INSTEAD, SHE'S ALL ABOUT THE HARD, MANUAL WORK.
FARM JOURNAL REPORT TAG:
THANKS, BETSY. SARAH WAS JUST ONE OF THE SPEAKERS AT FARM JOURNAL'S EXECUTIVE WOMEN IN AGRICULTURE CONFERENCE THIS WEEK IN CHICAGO. WHEN WE COME BACK, A VIEWER DISAGREES WITH JOHN'S STANCE ON NET NUETRALITY.
CUSTOMER SUPPORT:
WELCOME BACK. NOT EVERYONE AGREES WITH JOHN'S COMMENTARY EACH WEEK. AND TODAY, JOHN DISCUSSES AN OPPOSING VIEW WE RECEIVED THIS WEEK. JOHN.
BAXTER BLACK:
THANKS, JOHN. IF YOU AGREE OR DISAGREE WITH JOHN, FEEL FREE TO EMAIL HIM AT MAILBAG AT U-S FARM REPORT DOT COM. WHEN WE COME BACK, WE'LL CONTINUE WITH OUR WOMEN IN AG THEME WITH SOME COWGIRL POETRY FROM BAXTER BLACK.
NEXT WEEK:
NEXT WEEK, WE'RE OFF TO MISSOURI TO MEET A FAMILY PASSIONATE ABOUT SHARING THEIR FARM....WITH THE COMMUNITY AND THEIR KIDS. A LEAVE A LEGACY STORY YOU WONT WANT TO MISS.
TRACTOR TALES:
LONG AGO MANY FARMERS PUT THEIR PLOWS AWAY FOR GOOD. THEY NOW EMPLOY NO-TILL, LIMITED TILL OR OTHER TYPES OF TILLAGE IN THE FIELD. HOWEVER, OCCASIONALLY THEY'LL PULL THOSE OLD PLOWS AND OLD TRACTORS OUT OF THE SHED FOR FUN.
TODD GLEASON FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS TELLS US WHY SOME FARMERS ARE REMINISCING OF THE GOOD 'OL DAYS.
TRACTOR PICS:
NOW FROM OUR FACEBOOK PAGE…TAKE A LOOK AT THIS HANDSOME DEVIL. THIS IS BRADY TAYLOR AND HE'S SITTING ON A 1962 POWERMASTER 861. THIS CLASSIC FORD IS BRADY'S GREAT GRANDFATHER'S, GENE ODLE. THANKS TO DENNY ODLE FOR PROVIDING US WITH THESE PHOTOS.
CHURCH SALUTE:
TODAY'S COUNTRY CHURCH SALUTE GOES TO ST PAUL LUTHERN CHURCH OF QUINCY, WASHINGTON. EVEN BEFORE THE CITY WAS INCORPORATED IN 1907, THE CHURCH WAS BUILT. DURING THE CITY'S CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION IN 2007, THE CHURCH WANTED TO DO SOMETHING SPECIAL FOR THE CITY. SO, THEY PURCHASED THE OLD CHURCH BUILDING, LIETRALLY FROM UNDER THE WRECKING BALL, AND GIFTED IT TO THE CITY TO BE USED AS THE HISTORICAL MUSEUM. TODAY, THE BUILDING IS USED FOR MAINLY WEDDINGS, FUNERALS AND FAMILY REUNIONS, AS WELL AS A BIG CHRISTMAS CELEBRATION EACH YEAR.     OUR THANKS TO GAR PILLIAR FOR SHARING THEIR STORY…
