THIS WEEK ON U.S. FARM REPORT
EPISODE #1970
MAY 14-15, 2011

TODAY ON U.S. FARM REPORT. THE WEAK DOLLAR AND SURGING DEMAND SPARK A RECORD AG EXPORT PACE.

COMMODITY BUYERS FIND SMALL COMFORT IN LARGER SUPPLY.

AND OUR CROP WATCHERS HAVE SOME GOOD NEWS FOR A CHANGE.

U.S. FARM REPORT, BROUGHT TO YOU BY CHEVY AND THEIR AWARD WINNING CARS, TRUCKS AND CROSSOVERS.

HELLO AND WELCOME TO U.S. FARM REPORT. A PATTERN SEEMS TO BE DEVELOPING FOR SOME OF US ON OUR FARMS. INSTEAD OF A PLANTING SEASON WE HAVE SHORT BURSTS OF ACTIVITY BETWEEN LONG WAITS OF WEATHER. A DOWNPOUR MISSED US LAST WEEK AND WE HAD ABOUT 80 HOURS BEFORE BEING STOPPED AGAIN. MUCH WAS REPLANTING THE PREVIOUS SPURT IN EARLY APRIL BUT PROGRESS WAS MADE. AS ONE OF OUR SPONSORS SAYS IT MAKE IT'S CRITICAL TO BE READY BECAUSE THERE IS A HUGE PENALTY FOR DOWN TIME. TIME FOR THE HEADLINES AND HERE IS LINDSEY HILL.

THANK YOU. HELLO. AMERICA'S FARMERS AND RANCHERS APPEAR TO BE LEADING THE WAY IN ECONOMIC RECOVERY FOR THE COUNTRY. THAT'S ACCORDING TO AGRICULTURE SECRETARY ON HEARING THE LATEST AG EXPORT FIGURES. THE U.S. AGRICULTURAL EXPORTS SET A RECORD HIGH. U.S. FARM EXPORTS REACHED $75 BILLION. THAT'S A 27% INCREASE OVER THE SAME TIME PERIOD A YEAR AGO. NEARLY 20% ARE HEADED TO CHINA. CANADA IS THE SECOND LARGEST MARKET.

U.S. CORN SURRENDER SURPLUSES EXPECTED TO GROW MORE NEXT YEAR. THAT WAS A SURPRISE FROM THE MAY SUPPLY DEMAND SUPPORT. U.S.D.A. RAISED THE CORN ENDING STOCK TO 730 MILLION-BUSHELS, ABOVE TRADE NUMBERS OF 661 MILLION- BUSHELS. THEY ALSO PEGGED THE ENDING STOCKS AT 900 MILLION-BUSHELS, 92 BILLION OVER THE ESTIMATE.

THE FIRST ESTIMATE OF THE WINTER WEAK CROP TAKES IN TO ACCOUNT THE DROUGHT IN THE SOUTHERN PLAIN AT 1.4 BILLION- BUSHEL, A DECLINE OF 4% FROM LAST YEAR. THE U.S. YIELD IS FORECAST AT 44.5-BUSHELS AN ACRE DOWN MORE THAN TWO BUSHELS FROM LAST YEAR.

SOYBEAN ENDING STOCK FOR THE YEAR ARE PROJECTED AT 170 MILLION-BUSHELS, THAT UP 30 MILLION FROM LAST MONTH BECAUSE OF REDUCED EXPORT.

FARMERS ARE TRYING TO PLAY CATCH UP WITH SPRING PLANTING. THE CROP PROGRESS REPORT SHOWED 40% OF THE CORN CROP IS PLANTED. THAT'S A BIG JUMP OVER THE PREVIOUS WEEK. FARMERS IN IOWA HAD A 61 POINT GAME BUT THE EASTERN CORN BELT IS STRUGGLING, JUST 4% OF INDEPENDENTND CORN AND 2% OF OHIO CORN IS PLANTED AND I KNOW ILLINOIS FARMERS HAD A PRETTY GOOD SUCCESS LAST WEEK BUT THEY ARE STILL 28 POINTS BEHIND AVERAGE.

AND AS YOU GO FARTHER EAST IT'S WORSE. THAT'S WHAT I THINK IS CONFUSING ABOUT THIS REPORT. THERE MAY BE 700 MILLION- BUSHELS, I DON'T KNOW. MY GUESS IS IT'LL BE IN THE WRONG PLACE. WE WILL TALK WITH THE GUYS LATER ON.

I THINK THERE IS A LOT OF QUESTION ABOUT THIS REPORT THAT CAME OUT THIS WEEK. >> THANK YOU. >> .

CROP WATCH STARTS IN THE SOONER STATE. IN OKLAHOMA THAT'S NORTHWEST OF OKLAHOMA CITY A GROWER SAID SOME AREAS VERY LOW AND SOME LOOK FAIR. IT DEPENDS ON THE AMOUNT OF RAIN RECEIVED IN FEBRUARY. CORN PLANTED IN IRRIGATED FIELDS LOOKS GOOD, NONIRRIGATED CORN IS STRUGGLING BUT IT'S COMING SLOWLY. IN YUMA COUNTY COLORADO CORN IS MOSTLY PLANTED, IT'S VERY DRY, MOST ARE IRRIGATING ALREADY. AND IN MERCER A GROWER MARVELS AT HOW QUICKLY YOU CAN GET CROPS PLANTED WITH LARGER EQUIPMENT. THEY PLANTED 1800 ACRES OF CORN IN SEVEN DAYS. TWO OF THOSE DAYS WERE FILLED WITH DELAYS AND BREAK DOWNS. WHEN WE RETURN LINDSEY IS BACK TO TALK MARKETS WITH GREG HUNT AND GREG WAGNER. THE DISCUSSION STARTS IN TWO MINUTES. PLEASE STAY WITH US.

YOU'RE WATCHING U.S. FARM REPORT. U.S. FARM REPORT, THE SPIRIT OF THE COUNTRYSIDE. .

WE'RE AT BUSINESS DESK AND ARE JOINED BY GREG HUNT AND GREG WAGNER. WANT TO START BY TALKING ABOUT U.S.D.A. REPORT THAT CAME OUT THIS WEEK. WHAT WE HEARD AFTER THE REPORTS WAS THEY SEEM TO BE BEARISH BUT YOU SAID I'M NOT SO SURE ABOUT THAT.

PROBABLY TWO ASPECTS, PARTICULARLY IN CONCERN WITH CORN, ONE IS THE SUPPLY SIDE WHICH IS OLD CROP, OF COURSE THE DEMAND SIDE AND I GUESS THE SAME THING WITH BLUE CROP, THE FACT THAT U.S.D.A -- SIGNIFICANTLY BUT WE ARE STILL IN A VERY TIGHT SITUATION. THE OTHER THING IS WE HAVE A GROWING SEASON IN FRONT OF US. IF YOU LOOK AT HOW THIS CORN MARKET HAS PREFORMED AND WHAT WAS I THINK PROJECTED IN THE CORN MARKET PRIOR TO THE REPORT'S RELEASE, WE STARTED MAKING IT AND YOU SAW JULY CORN AT EIGHT DOLLAR RANGE, ABOUT 50- CENTS HIGHER THAN THE OLD HIGHS. IF YOU LOOK AT DRY DECEMBER SPREAD IT STALLED AT WHERE IT WAS IN FEBRUARY, MARCH, SO IF YOU LOOK AT SPREADS, OLD CROP, NEW CROP SPREAD, IS A INDICATION OF WHERE PRICE STRENGTH IS. . . AND THAT RATIONING IS SOMETHING WE SEEMED TO BE LOOK FOR FOR SOME TIME PERIOD AND MAYBE WE STARTED TO FINDT. A LOT OF THE RESPONSE WAS MAYBE YOU THE REPORT WAS A LITTLE TO ROSIE, WHAT DO YOU THINK?

WELL, I THINK THAT YOU KNOW WHAT WE ARE SEEING HERE IS BASICALLY THIS IS THE THIRD TIME WE HAVE SEEN THIS KIND OF JOB AND ALL OF THEM HAPPEN ON BASICALLY THE SAME IDEA AND THAT WAS WE ADDED ON A LOT OF CORN HERE AFTER WE SAW THIS -- THIS MARCH 31st REPORT. WE ADDED ABOUT 60,000 CORN THEY HAD TAKEN OFF PRIOR, WE SAW IN MARCH AND THERE WAS NO MONEY MADE IN THAT POSITION. ONCE WE STARTED ROLLING OVER WITH THE SAME MO WE STARTED THIS CASCADING EFFECT, EVERYBODY JUST --PANICKING AND WE SAW THE --THIS HAPPEN AGAIN. WHAT'S DIFFERENT ABOUT THIS TIME, NOVEMBER AND THE BREAK WE SAW IN MARCH, IS EVEN ON THE UPS WE ARE SEEING LIQUIDATION, PEOPLE GETTING OUT OF THE MARKET THE THAT'S WHAT THE TAPE IS TELLING ME. EVEN WITH WHAT MANY DIFFERENT SITUATIONS WE ARE SEEING RIGHT NOW, WE ARE SEEING THIS LARGE PART OF THIS MONEY TO THE METALS MARKET INTO THE GRAIN MARKET AND OBVIOUSLY INTO THE CRUDE. BACKING OUT OF THE STUFF AND WE WILL SEE WHAT STICKS AND RIGHT NOW OVER THE NEXT SAY TEN DAYS WE WILL FIND WHAT MARKETS WILL HOLD TOGETHER AND WHAT WON'T AND I WOULD SAY THAT THE CORNS WILL PROBABLY BE THE WINNER OF THIS WHOLE DEAL. FOR THE REASONS WE SEE WHAT'S GOING ON IN THE OHIO RIVER VALLEY UP IN TOWN IN MISSISSIPPI. THE GOVERNMENT DID TAKE DOWN THE YIELD, THAT'S BASICALLY JUST A --I CALL IVORY TOWER TYPE THING TO DO. IT COULD BE A LOT HIGHER, ONE THING I'M CONFIDENT ON WE HAVE LOST ACRES IN CORN. AT THE MINIMUM I THINK A MILLION AND IT CAME TO A LOT HIGHER. SO, THAT'S --WASN'T IN THIS REPORT AND I THINK YOU KNOW THAT TAKES THE NUMBERS DOWN ANOTHER COUPLE HUNDRED MILLION THAN WHAT THEY POSTED FOR STARTERS. SO, WE WILL SEE HERE ONCE THIS LIQUIDATION, IT DOESN'T MEAN THE MARKET GOES DOWN BUT IF YOU SEE THIS MARKET HOLD AND THIS ISN'T BEING LIQUIDATED AND MONDAY NIGHT YOU GET A ROBUST NUMBER WHICH I THINK YOU WILL --IT COULD BE ALMOST TWO THIRDS PLANTED, THIS MARKET DOESN'T BREAK, THE GAME IS ON.

YOU MENTIONED THE OUTSIDE MARKETS, LET'S TALK ABOUT METALS IN TERMS OF GOLD AND SILVER. WE HAVE BEEN WATCHING THAT, WHAT'S YOUR FEELING IN TERMS OF WHAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN NEXT?

THE GOVERNMENT STOP BUYING BONDS, THE BOND MARKET HOLDING TOGETHER. YIELDS LOWER, IT'S ACTING WELL, IT'S NOT SENSING ANYTHING ON THE INFLATION SIDE. WE ARE REALLY SEEING PROBABLY A LOT OF CALLS BEING MADE BY A LOT OF BANKS OVER THE WORLD, THE LAYOFF, THE METALS, WE HAVE SEEN THAT POSTED HERE THE LAST TWO OR THREE WEEKS. THE POINT IS THAT --SOME OF THESE THINGS RAN UP JUST ON ETF MONEY, THE MONEY RUNNING MONEY LIKE SILVER, DID MUCH LIKE IT DID IN 1980, GOLD HAS A LOT STRONGER FOUNDATION BEHIND IT ON THE PARTICIPANTS IN IT, THE CENTRAL BANKS ET CETERA, WE ARE SEEING THOSE MARKETS BREAK, THEY ARE LEADING THE WAY DOWN AND YOU KNOW --.

TRUE. WE ARE ON THE SAME PAGE.

WE WILL FIND OUT WHAT PAGE YOU ARE ON. WE WILL TAKE A BREAK. MORE U.S. FARM REPORT COMING UP. .

WE WERE TALKING ABOUT THE METALS MARKETS AND FOUND THE TWO OF YOU MAY NOT BE ON THE SAME PAGE.

A LOT OF THIS MONEY HAS BEEN TIED UP IN THE INDEX FUND AND WHAT I'M SEEING RIGHT NOW, WE ARE SEEING LIQUIDATION. HOW FAR THAT CARRIES WE WILL SEE BUT THE MAIN DRIVER BEHIND MOST OF THE MARKETS IS --THE MONEY THAT'S PARTICIPATING. THAT'S MY TAKE.

I KIND OF THINK THAT YOU KNOW IF YOU LOOK AT THE METALS MARKET, YOU LOOK AT THE GRAIN MARKET AND --THE TECHNICAL STANDPOINT, WHETHER OR NOT THE FUNDS DRIVE THE MARKET I HAVE NEVER BEEN ABLE TO BUY INTO THE IDEA THAT THE TAIL IS WAGGING THE DOG. IN OTHER WORDS THAT IN THE ABSENCE OF MONEY FLOWS YOU WOULDN'T FIND A FUNDAMENTAL VALUE TO WHETHER THE CORN OR SOYBEAN IN THE GRAIN MARKETS ARE WEAK WEAK OR GOLD OR SILVER. IF YOU LOOK AT THE --THE FUNDAMENTALS IN THE DOLLAR AND THE INFLATION INVESTMENT IN SILVER AS FAR AS GOLD TO A CERTAIN EXTENT, I THINK IF YOU LOOK AT THE DOLLAR, U.S. DOLLAR IT'LL CONTINUE TO BE WEAK, VERY LITTLE TO BE SUPPORTED THE WEAK DOLLAR IS SUPPORTIVE TO COMMODITIES, WHETHER THEY BE SOFT --HARD COMMODITY, CRUDE OIL OR GOLD OR SILVER OR GRAIN MARKETS. I'M NOT RAGING BULL BUT I'M --

WE TALK ABOUT VALUE OF THE DOLLAR USING THE BONDS, KIND OF AS A INDICATION OF THAT. THAT'S SOMETHING WE WERE TALKING ABOUT.

THE BOND MARKET IS ACTING VERY WELL. EVEN THOUGH IT KNOWS THAT QE2 WILL HIT VERY SHORTLY AND THAT'S ALL YOU CAN SAY ABOUT IT. IT'S THE MARKET THAT PROBABLY PUT ON A BID TODAY LOOK AT MORE OF WHAT'S GOING ON OVER THE WEEKEND IN THE EU. THAT'S WHAT DOLLAR IS CATCHING THE BID AND THE EURO IS GETTING THE HIT ON. WE ARE IN A SITUATION THAT LOOK, HIGHER PRICES --MOST LIKELY CRUD OIL MARKET. THE SHORT TERM THAT WAS PROBABLY NEGATIVE, A LOT OF THINGS AND THE MENTALITY OF IT AROUND THE WORLD. WHAT WILL END UP HAPPENING IS THE BREAKING CRUDE WILL PROBABLY BE BULLISH TO THE GRAIN MARKETS. THE EXCESS MONEY BEING SPENT THERE, WILL TRANSLATE OVERTIME. WE WERE BLENDING ONLY --AS MUCH GAS AS WE COULD MAKE AND IF YOU DON'T MAKE IT WILL AFFECT ETHANOL. YOU BREAK THE PRICE, IT'S -- THE TREND SEEMS TO BE AT THE MOMENT. ITS GOING TO PAN OUT TO BE GOOD FOR EVERYBODY AND THE ECONOMY AS A WHOLE.

IN THE TIME WE HAVE LEFT WE HAVE TO TALK ABOUT PLANTING PROGRESS. THAT'S THE HUGE QUESTION MARK HERE FOR EVERYBODY, PARTICULARLY AS WE START TO LOOK IN THE NORTHERN YEARS, THINGS NOT LOOKING GOOD.

YOU GO UP INTO THE DAKOTA'S AND IT'S WHERE A LOT OF THIS CAME FROM AND NOW YOU WONDER WHETHER OR NOT THE IMPACT THAT WE HAVE, OBVIOUSLY LIKE GREG SAID EARLIER, TOTAL PLANTED AC ERA GE I THINK WE NEED OVERTIME TO SEE WHAT YIELDS HAVE DONE IN VARIOUS CONDITIONS, WHERE YOU HAVE EXTREMELY, MUCH LATER PLANTING PROGRESS THAN YOU HAVE TODAY AND COME BACK FROM RECORD YIELDS OR VERY GOOD YIELDS, IT'S WHAT WE WILL BETRAYING NOW IS WEATHER AND ULTIMATELY, YOU KNOW, DEVELOPING THE HIGH IN THE SOUTHWEST, MIGRATES TO THE MIDWEST AND THEN SUDDENLY YOU AREN'T WORRIED ABOUT ITS TO WET OUT, MAYBE TO DRY. WE HAVE A [INAUDIBLE].

YOUR FINAL COMMENTS GREG.

WEATHER IS WEATHER AND I DON'T KNOW WHAT THE PATTERN IS RIGHT NOW. IT'S JUST --THE MARKET WILL BE IN A WAIT AND SEE PATTERN, ONCE I SEE LIQUIDATION IT'LL KEEP A PREMIUM, A PREMEDITATE BUILT BACK INTO THESE MARKETS FOR THE SUMMER WEATHER, IT'S JUST THE WAY IT'LL BE.

OUR THANK YOU TO GREG HUNT AND GREG WAGNER FOR JOINING US TODAY HERE AT THE BUSINESS DESK . WE WILL HAVE MORE COMING UP.

U.S. FARM REPORT IS BROUGHT TO YOU BY DUPONT THE SURE 2HERBICIDE THE BEST HERBICIDE. .

MIKE HOFFMAN, I LOVE THE HOT WEATHER ON THURSDAY AND FRIDAY BUT WILL IT CONTINUE?

NO. IT LOOKS LIKE A LOT CHILLIER AIR COMING IN TO THE CENTER OF THE COUNTRY, VERY SLOW MOVING STORM SYSTEM. IT'LL STILL BE WET IN THE GREAT LAKES AND OHIO VALLEY MOST OF THE WEEKEND BUT AT LEAST IT DOES START TO COOLDOWN A LITTLE BIT, TAKING SOME OF THAT HEAT AWAY. I KNOW YOU WOULD LIKE THE HEAT OBVIOUSLY.

YEAH.

AS FAR AS THE DROUGHT MONITOR WE ARE STILL SEEING THAT HEAT IN THE SOUTHERN PLAINS, TEXAS, OKLAHOMA, SOUTHERN NEW MEXICO, STILL UNDER A SEVERE TO EXTREME DROUGHT. THOUGH THEY HAD SOME AREAS OF RAIN IN CENTRAL AND EASTERN TEXAS IT'S PROBABLY HELPED THINGS A LITTLE BIT. LET'S CHECK THE JET STREAM OUT AND THIS IS THE SITUATION, THIS IS STILL THAT SAME STORM SYSTEM THAT WENT FROM HERE TO HERE THROUGHOUT LAST WEEK AND IT STILL IS KIND OF SPINNING ITS WHEELS OVER THE OHIO VALLEY. THAT'S FINALLY GOING TO BE PICKED UP BY THIS JET STREAM AND MOVE SLOWLY NORTHEAST WARD. YOU CAN SEE THAT'S STILL KIND OF SLOW. ZONAL FOR A WHILE AND THEN WE START TO SEE ANOTHER LOW, ALWAYS TOUGH TO FORECAST THESE CUT OFF LOWS, IT'S HARD TO KNOW WHEN THEY WILL FINALLY START MOVING. AS OF NOW BY NEXT WEEKEND WE WILL START TALKING ABOUT A SLOW MOVING STORM SYSTEM IN THE ROCKIES AND THE HEAT BUILDING BACK INTO THE SOUTHEAST AND ALSO THE CENTER OF THE COUNTRY. THERE IS MONDAY'S FORECASTED MAP, THERE IS THE TWO AREAS OF LOW PRESSURE WITH THIS SYSTEM JUST SPINNING ITS WHEELS OVER THE OHIO VALLEY, SOUTHERN AND EASTERN GREAT LAKES, THUNDERSTORMS --COOLER, CHILLY WEATHER ACROSS MUCH OF THE CENTER OF THE COUNTRY IN AND THE NEXT STORM SYSTEM --BY WEDNESDAY THAT SYSTEM MOVING INTO ALMOST THE PANHANDLE OF TEXAS. THE SYSTEM IN THE EAST STILL SITTING OVER THE NORTHEAST GREAT LAKE WAS SHOWERS UP THERE, IT'LL START TO WARM UP THROUGH HERE BUT ON THE COOL SIDE AND THEN AS WE HEAD TOWARD FRIDAY WE DO LOOK AT --SHOULD BE AN AREA OF LOW PRESSURE, WE WILL SEE THAT STORM SYSTEM MOVING EASTWARD WITH SOME RAIN THROUGH THE MIDDLE OF THE COUNTRY, TRYING TO WARMS UP AHEAD OF THE SYSTEM, STILL MOISTURE ALONG THE EAST COAST AS WELL. BACK WITH THE LONGER RANGE FORECAST IN THE NEXT HALF HOUR. .

THE UN POPULATION PROJECT RELEASED IT'S 2010 REVISIONS TO ESTIMATES FOR LATER IN THE CENTURY. I HAD BEEN LEADING TOWARD THE LOW SIDE OF POPULATION ESTIMATES AS THE RISING POWER OF MANY DEVELOPING COUNTRIES SEEMS TO SLOW THE FERTILITY RATE. FORGET THAT NOISE, THE CHANGES THIS YEAR CAN BE SUMMED UP IN ONE WORD, AFRICA. AS LIFE AND ECONOMIC PROGRESS INCH FORWARD IN THAT HUGE CONTINENT POPULATIONS START TO CLIMB. NIGERIA COULD SKYROCKET TO 700 MILLION PEOPLE BY 2100. THE FORECAST FOR CHINA HAS IT FALLING TO 950 MILLION WHILE INDIA GOES TO 1.74 MILLION. CONGO, OTHER COUNTRIES SHOW SIMILAR NUMBERS. IF IT HAPPENS THEY WILL NECESSARILY BE ALONG WITHIN COME GROWTH. VERY LONG RANGE PROJECTIONS SUBJECT TO HIGH ERRORS OF COURSE BUT I THINK THE LESSON IS CLEAR, WE NEED TO UNDERSTAND THE SECOND LARGEST CONTINENT BETTER. REMEMBER 20 YEARS AGO WHEN WE CARED LITTLE ABOUT CHINA AND NOW IT'S OUR MOST IMPORTANT AGRICULTURE CUSTOMER? THIS COULD BE A 20 YEAR WARNING FOR AFRICA. GET OUT THE GLOBE, STUDY AND WIDEN YOUR SEARCH TO START YOUR RESEARCH INTO WHAT LOOKS TO ME LIKE THE GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR THE NEXT GENERATION OF AGRICULTURE. LET US KNOW WHAT YOU THINK. SEND E-MAILS TO MAILBAG AT U.S. FARM REPORT.COM OR CALL AND LEAVE US A VOICEMAIL. COMING UP IN THE NEXT HALF HOUR, 4H HELPS FAMILY HIT THE LINKS. STAY WITH US. THE SECOND HALF OF U.S. FARM REPORT IS COMING RIGHT UP. .

TODAY ON U.S. FARM REPORT. IT ENCOURAGES KIDS TO DRINK MILK BUT DOES IT MAKE IT A DIETARY PROBLEM? 4H KIDS TEE OFF IN THE MILITARY.

AND RECORD FLOODING PLODS DOWN RIVER TO THE GULF OF MEXICO.

U.S. FARM REPORT, BROUGHT TO YOU BY CHEVY AND THEIR AWARD WINNING CARS, TRUCKS AND CROSSOVERS >>> HELLO AND WELCOME. EVEN THOUGH WE HAVE BEEN PUTTING IN DRAIN AS FAST AS POSSIBLE YEARS LIKE THIS ONLY RAMP UP THE COMMITMENT TO IMPROVE THE FILES AND SPEED CRITICAL OPERATIONS. WE HAVE BEEN WARNED HIGHER AVERAGE TEMPERATURES MEAN MORE WATER VAPOR AVAILABLE FOR DOWNPOURS AND WE ARE BETTING THEY ARE RIGHT. THIS REASONING MAY CROSS A POLITICAL LINE FOR MANY PRODUCERS. PROPER DRAINAGE FOR HEAVY FLAT SOIL SOCIAL SECURITY ALWAYS A GOOD IDEA. ALLOWING THAT TO BE COMPLICATED COULD IMPACT THE COMPETITIVENESS NOW AND IN THE FUTURE. LET'S GET STARTED THE HEADLINES.

THANK YOU. HELLO. THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER IS CONTINUING ITS POWERFUL AND DEVASTATING PATH TOWARD THE GULF OF MEXICO AND AGRICULTURE IN DIXIE IS FEELING. THE NUMBERS ARE NOTHING SHORT OF STAGGERING. ACCORDING TO NEWS AGENCY ABOUT 3 MILLION ACRES OF FARMLAND IN ARKANSAS, MISSISSIPPI AND TENNESSEE WILL BE SWAMPED BY THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER. IN ARKANSAS ALONE ABOUT 300,000 ACRES OF RICE WILL BE HIT BY THE FLOODWATERS. ACCORDING TO THE ARKANSAS FARM BUREAU THAT EQUALS 10% OF THE TOTAL U.S. RICE ACRES PLANTED. IN LOUISIANA THE STATE'S COMMISSIONER OF AGRICULTURE TOLD ME THEY EXPECT 3 MILLION ACRES OF LAND TO BE AFFECTED BY THE FLOOD BY OPENING A GIANT SPILLWAY. THE CORP. OF ENGINEERS IS TRYING TO STOP FLOODING IN NEW ORLEANS. BY OPENING THE SPILLWAY 90,000 ACRES OF FARMLAND WOULD BE FLOODED. IT WOULD AFFECT THOUSANDS OF RESIDENTS IN THE BASIN. FROM SOUTHERN ILLINOIS TO NEW ORLEANS THE FLOODING HAS FORCED THE CLOSING OF CERTAIN PORTIONS OF THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER TO ALL BARGE TRAFFIC. THAT'S A CONCERN FOR AGRICULTURE SINCE GRAIN AND OTHER AGRICULTURE PRODUCTS CAN'T BE SHIPPED. OFFICIALS SAID THE SITUATION REMAINS IN A CONSTANT STATE OF FLUX. THERE ARE MANY FARM GROUP THAT FEEL THE EPA IS OUT TO GET U.S. AGRICULTURE BY OVER REGULATING FARMS. WHETHER IT'S REGULATIONS OF WATER AND TUFT OR PESTICIDE APPLICATION FARMERS ARE WARY SOME OF THE PROPOSED REGULATIONS MAY GO A STEP TO FAR. THE SECRETARY OF AGRICULTURE INVITED EPA ADMINISTRATOR LISA JACKSON TO IOWA FOR A FIRSTHAND LOOK AT PRODUCTION AGRICULTURE. WHEN I WAS IN WASHINGTON LAST WEEK I ASKED THE SECRETARY ABOUT THAT VISIT AND HE WAS QUICK TO DISSPELL WHAT HE CALLED THE MYTHS THAT ARE CIRCULATING IN FARM COUNTRY.

WILL THERE BE A COW TAX, WILL WE TAX METHANE FROM COWS? NO. WE WILL SPILLED MILK BE IN THE --WITH IN THE FRAMEWORK OF OIL SPILLS, NO. WILL WE BE REGULATING DUST ON THE FARM, NO.

I THINK FOR US TO ENCOURAGE COMMUNICATION BETWEEN COMMODITY GROUPS AND THE EPA SO THERE IS A CLEAR LINE OF COMMUNICATION AND A CLEAR UNDERSTANDING OF WHAT EPA IS DOING AND WHY.

HE ADMITS HIS DEPARTMENT AND EPA MAY NOT ALWAYS DO A GOOD JOB TO SAY WHAT THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT IS DOING WHEN IT COMES TO REGULATING AMERICAN AGRICULTURE.

SPEAKING OF REGULATION, FLAVORED MILK IS UNDER FIRE FROM THE NATION'S SECOND LARGEST SCHOOL SYSTEM. THE LOS ANGELES SCHOOL DISTRICT MAY BAN CHOCOLATE MILK. THE REASON, HIGHER SUGAR CONTENT. THE SCHOOL SYSTEM BELIEVES IT ADDS TO THE CHILDHOOD OBESITY PROBLEM. THEY SAY IF THEY ARE REMOVED STUDENTS WON'T DRINK MILK. IF APPROVED IT GOES INTO EFFECT NEXT SCHOOL YEAR. THAT'S THE HEADLINES TODAY.

YOU DON'T THINK MUCH OF THE BAN ON CHOCOLATE MILK I TAKE IT?

I FEEL LIKE IT'S A PARENT'S RESPONSIBILITY, NOT THE SCHOOL.

INTERESTINGLY ENOUGH I -- I'M NOT IN THE PARENT BUSINESS ANYMORE BUT BOTH MY DAUGHTERS IN LAW DON'T USE CHOCOLATE MILK AND IT MAY BE AN INDIVIDUAL RESPONSIBILITY BUT IT COULD ALSO BE --IF YOU ARE THE LOS ANGELES SCHOOL DISTRICT ARE YOU LOOKING AT A DIFFERENT MIX OF PEOPLE AND HAVE TO MAKE A DECISION BASED ON THAT TOO.

I JUST THINK WE WILL GET TO WHERE REGULATING FOOD, DRINK SO MUCH WE WILL BE ON RICE CAKES AND WATER FOR THE KIDS.

IT'S CALIFORNIA, REMEMBER THAT. THANK YOU.

WEATHER ON U.S. FARM REPORT IS BROUGHT TO YOU BY NATIONWIDE AGRICULTURE BUSINESS. IT'S THE NUMBER ONE FARM INSURER IN THE U.S..

REMEMBER THAT SLOW MOVING STORM SYSTEM ALL OF LAST WEEK ACROSS THE PLAIN STATES? IT IS STILL HANGING AROUND THE OHIO VALLEY, ALL THE WAY UP TO NEW ENGLAND. BASICALLY ITS BEEN A CUT OFF AREA OF LOW PRESSURE AND THAT'S JUST SLOWLY GOING TO MOVE NORTHEAST AS WE HEAD THROUGH THE FIRST PART OF THE WEEK. COOLER WEATHER THEN STREAMING SOUTHWARD, IT'LL FEEL GOOD TO YOU FOLKS IN THE SOUTHERN PLAIN STATES WHERE IT GOT HOT AND HUMID LAST WEEK. NEXT TROUGH WITH RAIN AND MOUNTAIN SNOW. BY WEDNESDAY WE WILL STALE BE SEEING LIGHT SHOWERS ACROSS PARTS OF THE GREAT LAKES AS THE JET STREAM HANGING ON TO THE NORTHEAST. A WEAKENING SYSTEM MOVING NORTHEAST WARD. THE NEXT TROUGH CUTTING IN TO THE MIDDLE PART OF THE COUNTRY. COULD BE MORE GOOD NEWS FOR TEXAS AND OKLAHOMA. I DON'T SEE IT AS A BIG RAIN MAKER, NEXT SYSTEM OUT WEST AGAIN WITH RAIN AND SNOW, BY FRIDAY THEN THE TROUGH OVER THE MIDDLE OF THE COUNTRY AND IT'LL TRY TO CAUSE A LITTLE BIT OF AREA OF RAIN TO COME ACROSS THE PLAIN STATES INTO THE MISSISSIPPI VALLEY, A WARM UP FOR THE SOUTHEAST LOOKS LIKE TO THE RIDGE TRYING TO BUILD. ALWAYS TOUGH FOR THE COMPUTER MODELS TO HANDLE THE CUT OFF LOWS, THEY MAY MOVE SLOW, HERE IS THE NEXT WEEK FORECAST FOR TEMPERATURES, THIS IS FROM MAY 22nd THROUGH THE 28th TAKING US THROUGH ALMOST THE END OF THE MONTH. SOME GOOD NEWS FOR YOU FOLKS TRYING TO GET THE CORN AND BEANS TO COME UP IN THE CENTER OF THE COUNTRY, BELOW NORMAL FROM THE ROCKY MOUNTAINS ON TO THE WEST NEXT WEEK AS FAR AS PRECIPITATION, NOT SO GOOD NEWS FOR THE WET AREAS, BUT IT LOOKS LIKE ABOVE NORMAL FROM THE WESTERN OHIO VALLEY. BELOW NORMAL FOR THE SOUTHEAST, SOUTH TEXAS AND ALSO PARTS OF THE FOUR CORNER AREA. AS FAR AS THE 90 DAY OUTLOOK, BELOW NORMAL FROM THE GREAT LAKES ACROSS THE NORTHERN TIER OF STATES, WASHINGTON AND MONTANA. ABOVE NORMAL FROM GEORGIA AND FLORIDA, IN TO THE DESERT SOUTHWEST AND AS FAR AS PRECIPITATION OVER THE NEXT 90 DAYS, WE ARE LOOKING FOR IT TO BE ABOVE NORMAL, PARTS OF THE MISSOURI VALLEY, OHIO VALLEY AND INTO THE NORTHEAST, BELOW NORMAL FROM LOUISIANA, MISSISSIPPI THROUGH TEXAS AND INTO PARTS OF THE SOUTHWEST, NOT GOOD NEWS AGAIN BECAUSE WE ARE LOOKING AT THE SAME AREAS THAT ARE WET RIGHT NOW THOUGH THEY ARE BETTER THAN THEY WERE BUT RIGHT NOW --STILL KIND OF WET AND THE DROUGHT AREAS STILL BELOW NORMAL.

AND GROWING CORN WILL BE A LITTLE TRICKIER, SHIFTING LOWER --FASTER HYBRIDS, NOT SURE HOW MUCH OF THAT WILL BE PLANTED. THANK YOU.

SPIRIT OF THE HEART LAND IS NEXT.

ARE YOU WATCHING U.S. FARM REPORT. U.S. FARM REPORT, THE SPIRIT OF THE COUNTRYSIDE. .

RURAL AMERICA IS HOME TO SOME OF THE BEST OUTSIDE REC IN THE WORLD AND THAT INCLUDES LUSH FAIRWAYS AND CLOSE CUTS GREENS OF THE GOLF COURSE. TOBY HITS THE COURSE WHERE FAMILIES WERE LEARNING THE GAME BECAUSE OF A LITTLE HELP FROM 4H.

MADISON HAD NEVER PLAYED GOLF BEFORE.

DOES PUT PUT COUNT?

Reporter: THEY TOOK ADVANTAGE OF FREE GOLF ON THE COURSE DURING MILITARY KIDS AND BRATS THE FIRST TEAM EVENT. MADISON'S DAD IS IN THE AIR NATIONAL GUARD AND THE FAMILY HAS PARTICIPATED IN OTHER PROGRAMS. THEY TRAVELED FROM THEIR HOME FOR THE DAY.

WE BOTH LOVE PLAYING GOLF IN THE PAST, ITS BEEN A LONG TIME SINCE WE PLAYED BUT I THOUGHT MY DAUGHTER WOULD BENEFIT FROM THE EXPERIENCE.

Reporter: THE FIRST IS A NATIONAL YOUTH DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM THAT USES GOLF TO TEACH VALUABLE LIFE SKILLS.

WE ALSO DEAL WITH GOAL SETTING PERSONAL SKILLS, ETIQUETTE, WE USE THOSE TO TEACH TO THE KIDS.

Reporter: THEY LEARN PROPER TECHNIQUES FOR GRIPPING AND SWINGING THE CLUB, CHIPPING AROUND THE GREEN AND.

LOW TO HIT IT. IT'S PRETTY HARD. I CAN NEVER MAKET.

Reporter: THEY LEARN TO RESPECT THE COURSE ALSO.

MAKING SURE YOU THAT USE THE RAKE TO CLEAR THE SAND TRAP AND DO NOT CHIP THE FIELD IN THE SPECIAL PUTTING AREA .

Reporter: OPERATION MILITARY KIDS ORGANIZES ACTIVITIES LIKE THIS TO BRING TOGETHER MILITARY FAMILIES AND HELP CHILDREN SO THEY CAN MEET EACH OTHER, MAKE NEW FRIENDS AND HAVE FUN.

IF THEY MOVE AROUND A LOT THEN THAT STABLE ENVIRONMENT GOES WITH THEM. WITH THIS PROGRAM IT'S THE SAME BASICALLY ANYWHERE YOU GO.

FOR ME I'M OKAY WITH HAVING A MILITARY DAD BUT SOME OTHER KIDS IT MIGHT BE A LITTLE HARD FOR THEM.

Reporter: DAYS LIKE THIS ONE ARE HELPING MAKE IT A LITTLE EASIER. WITH THE AG CENTER.

OPERATION MILITARY KIDS IS A NATIONWIDE PROGRAM, WE WILL POST ALIENING ON THE HOME PAGE.

NEXT WEEK WE HEAD TO A SMALL COMMUNITY COLLEGE IN NEW MEXICO MAKING A BIG IMPACT ON THE RODEO. THAT'S NEXT WEEK.

LATER ON U.S. FARM REPORT A MULTILY STATE TRACTOR TALE. FIRST HOW CREATURES OF THE NIGHT ARE GIVING STROKE VICTIMS NEW HOPE. STAY WITH US. .

BATS OFTEN CAST AS CREEPY BUT THEY HAVE THEIR PLACE, ESPECIALLY IN RURAL AMERICA. THEY FEED ON BUG THAT CAN MAKE THINGS MISERABLE. NOW A NEW JOB FOR THEM. THEY CAN ACTUALLY HELP HUMANS WHO ARE HAVING A STROKE. CLARK POWELL WITH THE DETAILS.

THEY MIGHT LOOK SCARY BUT SCIENCISTS SAY THESE TINY BATS COULD PLAY A HUGE ROLE IN THE TREATMENT OF STROKE. WHEN A PATIENT IS BROUGHT THIS TO THE HOSPITAL DURING A VEHICLE DOCTORS HAVE TO ACT FAST TO DISSOLVE BLOOD CLOTS IN OR NEAR THE BRAIN AND BECAUSE OF A CHEMICAL IN THEIR SALIVIA NOTHING IN NATURE DISSOLVES BLOOD CLOTS BETTER THAN BATS.

WE ARE HOPING THE BATS SALIVIA DISSOLVES THE CLOT WITH LOWER RISK OF BLEEDING IN THE BRAIN AFTER THAT.

A STROKE SPECIALIST AT OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY, AFTER RESEARCHERS COMPLETED ONE STUDY SHOWING THAT DRUGS BASED ON BAT SALIVIA ARE SAFE HE IS LEADING A NEW NATIONAL STUDY TO SEE HOW HELPFUL THEY MAY BE. WITH CURRENT DRUGS THEY ONLY HAVE A THREE HOUR WIND TO TREAT STROKE PATIENTS.

IT'S ONE OF THE STUDIES THAT HAVE EXTENDED THE WINDOWS OF THE NIGHT HOURS SO PATIENT WHEN THEY PRESENT AFTER STROKE FROM THREW HOURS OF SYMINGTON ONSET TO NINE HOURS NOW HAVE ANOTHER OPTION THAT'S AVAILABLE.

THAT COULD MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE TO PATIENTS LIKE PEARL, A VETERAN WITH THREE PURPLE HEARTS. YEARS OF WAR MAY NOT HAVE CLAIMED HIM BUT A STROKE NEARLY DID.

I GOT ABOUT HALFWAY THROUGH EATING DINNER AND MY FORK DROPPED OUT OF MY HAND. I REACHED DOWN PICK IT UP AND PUT IT BACK AND IT FELL OUT AGAIN.

HE LIVES MILES OUT IN THE COUNTRY AND COULD USE THE EXTRA TIME IT TAKES TO GET TO THE HOSPITAL, SOMETHING THAT MAY SOME DAY WE LIKELY BECAUSE OF THE MOST UNLIKELY SOURCE. AT OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY MEDICAL CENTER THIS IS CLARK POWELL REPORTING.

CLARK SAID THE DRUGS WERE DEVELOPED USING BAT SALIVIA BUT ARE NOW USING MAN MADE COMPOUNDS.

WHEN WE COME BACK AL JOINS ME WITH TRACTOR TRAILS AND THE COUNTRY CHURCH SALUTE. PLEASE STAY WITH US. .

I GUESS THIS WEEK TRACTOR STARTS OUT IN SOUTH DAKOTA. . THAT'S RIGHT, LAST MONTH WE MET A COLLECTOR IN MICHIGAN WHO A PASSION BUT WANTED A TRUE WORK HORSE OF THE WEST.

ROUND HERE WE DON'T HAVE THESE BIG KIND OF TRACTORS. IT'S SORT OF OBVIOUSLY --ANY SHOW AROUND HERE BUT JUST LARGE, OPEN CHANCES OUT WEST, BIG FARMING BACK IN THE DAY IN THE LATE 50s AND EARLY 60s, THIS IS THE LARGEST ONE NATIONALLY MADE. THE TURBO IS THAT SOUND WHEN YOU START IS IT UP AT A SHOW PEOPLE TURN AND LOOK, THEY AREN'T USED TO THAT OUT OF A 560 SERIES TRACTOR. 80 HORSE POWER BACK THEN WAS A LOT OF HORSE POWER. THAT WAS BEFORE THE 4010 AND SO FORTH. THA T WAS PROBABLY THE MOST YOU COULD BUY FROM THE INTERNATIONAL DEALER. WE BOUGHT THIS FROM A GUY WHO COLLECTS INTERNATIONALS IN CENTRAL MICHIGAN. IT CAME FROM I BELIEVE SOUTH DAKOTA AREA. I DON'T KNOW WHERE BUT HE WAS COLLECTING AND WE FOUND IT AND WE LIKED THE LOOK, THE BIG 660, JUST GOT THAT LOOK WITH THE REARS AND THE --IT'S REALLY SHARP. IT WAS RUNNING BUT HAD A MISS, SO WE DON'T KNOW WHAT WE WERE GETTING IN TO UNTIL WE STARTED TAKING IT APART AND ONE OF THE CYLINDERS, THE SEATS WERE PITTED AND WE FOUND THE MISS AND YOU COULD SEE THE PISTONS RING SITTING DOWN, SO GOT ALL NEW PISTONS SLEEVES, IT'S PRETTY MUCH ALL BRAND NEW INSIDE. ALL THE NEIGHBORS JUST LIKE THIS TRACTOR, IT'S A LOT OF INTERNATIONAL FARMERS IN THE AREA AND THEY LIKE THAT. WE PULL IT OUT AND PUT IT OUT DURING HOLIDAYS AND THROW IT OUT FRONT AND DISPLAY, PEOPLE DRIVE BY AND STOP AND ASK QUESTIONS. IT'S JUST A --JUST A FUN TRACTOR TO DRIVE AND GETS A LOT OF ATTENTION HALT ANY SHOW.

JOIN US NEXT WEEK AS WE INTRODUCE YOU TO A CLASSIC JOHN DEERE IN THE FAMILY FOR THREE GENERATIONS. THIS COLLECTOR SHARED HIS STORY WITH US.

TODAY'S COUNTRY CHURCH SALUTE GOES TO BETHANY LUTHERAN IN KANSAS. STARTED BY SWEDISH IMMIGRANTS THE FIRST WAS BUILT OF SOD AND STONE IN A SMOKY VALLEY OF CENTRAL KANSAS. IT SERVED AS THE PLACE OF WORSHIP FOR FIVE-YEARS. IN 1874S CHURCH VOTED TO BUILD A NEW STRUCTURE AND IT'S THE SAME THAT STILL STANDS TODAY. OF COURSE THERE HAVE BEEN IMPROVEMENTS OVER THE YEARS SUCH AS THE 125-FOOT SUPERIOR. THE CHURCH ALSO PLAYED A KEY ROLE IN THE FORMATION OF BETHANY COLLEGE. THE CURRENT PASTOR IS REVERAND MEI. OUR THANK YOU TO A REGULAR VIEWER ON U.S. FARM REPORT FOR SHARING THIS STORY.

I WOULD LOVE TO HEAR FROM YOU ABOUT YOUR HOME CHURCH. SEND US A PHOTOGRAPH. STAY WITH US. JOHN'S MAILBAG IS NEXT.

COUNTRY CHURCH SALUTE IS BROUGHT TO YOU BY FARMERS FEEDING THE WORLD. AGRICULTURE LEADING THE WAY AND FEEDING A HUNGRY PLANET. LEARN MORE, GIVE, DREAM HUGE WITH US. .

TIME FOR A WEEKLY LOOK INSIDE THE OLD FARM REPORT MAKE BAG. DWIGHT THINKS THE DATA WE GAVE LAST WEEK ABOUT WORLD FARM OUTPUT DISPIRA AGED AMERICA AGRICULTURE. THE NUMBERS WERE NO DOUBT ACCURATE BUT STANDING ALONE THEY PRESENT A VERY NEGATIVE VIEW OF AMERICAN AGRICULTURE. IF WE ARE SUCH A SMALL PART OF WORLD AGRICULTURE OUTPUT WHY DO IS HE SEE MONTH MANY BAGS OF GRAIN IN ALL THE STARVING COUNTRIES? ONE QUICK ANSWER ABOUT FOOD AID IS OUR MEDIA AS A RULE ONLY SHOWS THE BAGS WITH OUR FLAGS ON THEM AND THE U.S. DOES HELP A NUMBER OF COUNTRIES. YOUR LARGER POINT IS I THINK THE DATA CONTRADICT WAS A FEW OF AGRICULTURE BEING THE DOMINANT WORLD PLAY IR, THAT'S NEVER BEEN THE CASE. IT'S A STANDARD POLICY TO DISPLAY SELECTIVE IMAGES. I FIND THAT PRACTICE PATRINIZING, ASIDE FROM THAT I'M CONCERNED THAT FOSTERING AN INACCURATE PICTURE WILL LEAD ME ME TO MAKE BAD DECISIONS. THE NUMBERS WHAT THEY ARE AND THE FACT WE AREN'T NUMBER ONE IN EVERYTHING IS A GOOD THING. GROWING WHAT WE ALL GROW BEST ENCOURAGES TRADE AND TRADE ENCOURAGES PEACE. AS ALWAYS WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU. SEND COMMENTS TO MAILBAG AT U.S. FARM REPORT.COM OR LEAVE US A VOICE MAIL. FOR ALL OF US, THANK YOU FOR WATCHING U.S. FARM REPORT. BE SURE TO JOIN US AGAIN NEXT WEEK. WE WILL BE WORKING TO DO EVEN BETTER.
