Wal-Mart Will Sell 100% Cage-Free Eggs by 2025 in Industry Shift

Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the world’s largest retail chain, will sell 100 percent cage-free eggs in the U.S. by 2025, joining an industry-wide shift toward a practice that’s seen as more humane.

As part of the transition, Wal-Mart and its Sam’s Club warehouse chain will require that its egg suppliers adopt United Egg Producers rules or an equivalent set of standards, the retailer said in a statement Tuesday. Compliance will be checked annually by a third party.

Wal-Mart sells more groceries than anyone else in the U.S., and its decisions typically sway the rest of the industry. The Bentonville, Arkansas-based company has offered cage-free eggs since 2001, though not exclusively.

Other companies, meanwhile, have set various timelines for making the switch. That includes consumer-food sellers and restaurant chains such as Taco Bell and Burger King. The idea is to give chickens more room to move around, improving the animals’ welfare.

The challenge for Wal-Mart is transitioning to cage-free eggs while keeping a lid on prices, something the chain said it can do with the 2025 deadline.

“Our customers and associates count on Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club to deliver on affordability and quality, while at the same time offering transparency into how their food is grown and raised,” Kathleen McLaughlin, the retailer’s chief sustainability officer, said in the statement.

  “Our customers and associates count on Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club to deliver on affordability and quality, while at the same time offering transparency into how their food is grown and raised,” Ultimately, customers drive markets. Always have, always will. You can drag your feet. You can delay it. You can stick your head in the ground. But the customers will always, eventually, bludgeon the producer into producing what the customer actually wants, not what the producer want to produce. They don't want your GMO crops and they will eventually drive them out of the marketplace, just like they have caged eggs, hormones in milk, antibiotics in meat, and alar on apples. Now, you can continue to stand in front of the oncoming glacier and be pulverized into oblivion or you can take what time remains and learn to produce what customers actually want and are willing to pay for. No product, in history, has ever survived, long term, against the desires of the customer base, short of the use of force. You don't have to like it, but it is reality.

  The only problem with that kenn is that you are brain washing customers to think they are cage free and they are not you should tell customers that they are less confined chicken eggs not cage free because they are in a cage with a little more space leading customers to believe that chickens are roaming around and someone is picking up eggs is misleading and that's where wal mart is wrong

  Great observation. Why so radical? We as the farm community will grow you anything you pay for. Always have always will. If the decision of the majority is to reduce productivity and pay more per calorie we are up to the task. We will not stand in the way. Supply down, demand up (population growth) equals higher margins. Brilliant except for one thing. Starvation in the world isn't because there is not enough food today in the market, it is because they can't afford our food. No civilization in history has survived, long term, against starvation, short of the use of force. You don't have to like that, but it is reality. Not many Walmart's in central Africa. Maybe sharing the bounty is a better answer. Just saying. American Farmers are not here just to feed you, we are here to feed the world.
