Washington state hosts 2009 Beef Market Outlook telephone conference

October 19, 2008 07:00 PM

Two of the nation's leading authorities on cattle markets will discuss the 2009 Market Outlook for beef during a telephone conference scheduled from 7:15 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. on November 5.

Jim Robb, director of the Livestock Information Center, and Erica Rosa, agricultural economist, will cover cattle and beef supply and demand, competing meats, feed projections, international trade, valuation of the dollar, roller coaster economy, risk management, and beef and cattle price forecast.

Ranchers can participate from home, join with neighbors or a local cattle producers' organization to participate. A slide set will be available on November 3 to illustrate the telephone presentation. Those with Internet access can download it at http://livestocktopics.wsu.edu, where instructions for dialing into the telephone conference are also posted. The slide set may be printed or viewed on computer or with multi-media projector.

Tom Platt, Washington State University Extension Lincoln County educator, encourages beef producers to join with their neighbors or a local producer organization to host a viewing location for the telephone conference and slide presentation. Alternatively, he says ranchers are welcome to participate from home. In either case, Platt asks that participants contact him in advance (509-725-4171) so that he can provide calling instructions for the telephone conference, and for those without Internet access, make arrangements for printed copy of the slide set at a local WSU Extension office.

A group viewing location will be hosted by Spokane County Cattlemen at the Spokane County WSU Extension Center at N. 222 Havana. As other viewing locations become available, they will be posted at http://livestocktopics.wsu.edu. WSU Extension programs are offered without discrimination.
