Parmesan, cheddar, pepper jack, gouda. Everyone has a favorite flavor of cheese!
This year at the World Cheese Championship Contest in Madison, Wisconsin, a new world favorite is joining the competition: paneer, an unsalted cheese made from a blend of buffalo and cow’s milk.
The cheese is a favorite in Indian cuisine, and it’s the first year it’s being judged at the competition.
“Our contest changes just as consumer preferences do,” said Rebecca Sweeney of the Wisconsin Cheese Makers Association. “In the marketplace you are seeing growth in international cheeses, things like paneer.”
There are more than 3,400 entries from 26 different countries.
The winners of the 121 classes of dairy products will be held Thursday evening.
The next World Cheese Championship Contest will be in 2020.
