Western New York-based Grocer Commits to Cage-Free Eggs

April 26, 2016 12:28 PM

Western New York-based Tops has joined the ranks of retailers pledging to sell only cage-free eggs.

Tops Friendly Markets says it has provided cage-free organic eggs for years but plans to source all of its private label eggs locally from chickens in cage-free housing by 2025.

The move comes as the food industry has been pressed by animal rights groups to eliminate using confined egg-laying hens.

The nation's largest food retailer, Wal-Mart Stores Inc., made the same pledge earlier this month, joining McDonalds, Target and Costco.

Tops is based in the Buffalo suburb of Williamsville and operates 168 supermarkets in upstate New York, Pennsylvania and Vermont.
