Wheat Growers Support South Dakota Rancher Relief Fund

October 25, 2013 07:25 AM

In an effort to help ranchers who suffered tremendous loss of livestock during the Oct. 4-7 blizzard, Wheat Growers is supporting the South Dakota Rancher Relief Fund by accepting grain donations directed to this fund. These contributions came about thanks to Wheat Growers customers who wanted their cooperative to find a way for them to contribute a portion of their harvest to those that suffered livestock loss.

Terry Leonhardt of Groton is a Wheat Growers member who is supporting the Wheat Growers’ Rancher Relief effort and will be donating grain to the cause.

"I have a lot of friends out there," Leonhardt says. "I have a lamb feedlot here and buy a lot of lambs right off the ranches. I know these guys and I know the struggles they go through. I really feel for these folks. It’s our state and too often it gets divided east and west and we need to stand up for our brethren ranchers."

Wheat Growers customers that would like to sell some of their grain and donate the proceeds directly to the Rancher Relief Fund can do so at any Wheat Growers grain location.

"We wanted to make this as easy a process as possible for our customers, and make sure the funds get to the ranchers as quickly as possible," Steve Briggs, Wheat Growers senior vice president of agronomy and corporate marketing, says. "All they have to do is tell the Wheat Growers location how much grain they would like to donate, and the amount from that sale will go directly from Wheat Growers to the Rancher Relief Fund in their name."

The South Dakota Rancher Relief Fund was established on Oct. 8, 2013, by Black Hills Area Community Foundation (BHACF) to provide support and relief assistance to those in the agriculture industry impacted by the blizzard of Oct. 4-7, 2013. The fund will be administered by BHACF in cooperation with the South Dakota Stockgrowers Association, the South Dakota Cattlemen’s Association and the South Dakota Sheep Growers Association for the direct benefit of the livestock producers impacted by this devastating blizzard.
