World’s Fastest Tractor Gets to the Field in a Flash

Are you still trying to get spring planting done? Well here’s the tractor that will have your corn popping up in rows in no time.

At a speed of 80.88 mph (130.17 km/h) AGCO’s Valtra T234 tractor featuring special winter tires from Nokian Heavy Tyres will have producers across the globe in awe. The Valtra T234 tractor holds the distinction of world’s fastest tractor according to Guinness World Records after it was raced on Feb. 19th in Vuojärvi, Finland.

The tractor was driven by Juha Kankkunen – a former four-time World Rally Champion who hails from Finland – on a racing strip packed with snow measuring 1.43 miles (2,300 meters).

As part of a marketing campaign the entire event was captured on film for a YouTube video to promote Nokian’s Hakkapeliitta TRI tires. The tires are designed for winter use and are hailed as “the first northproof winter contracting tire in the world.”

The tractor had a standard factory motor, but the software for the computer was adjusted to increase engine speeds.

During the testing phases the track had to be altered to take out a curve that was reducing the speed the Valtra T234 could be driven at and there were also some parts that broke thanks to the increased revolutions.

Finally after several attempts over a two-day period the record speed was achieved.

After breaking the record Kankkunen said, “It’s heartwarming, having made some world records with a car especially with speed on ice. Now it was a tractor. I guess it won’t end here, but it was fun.”

Okay, now we'd have to license and insure the tractors for road travel. More expense. Can those tires be used appropriately in the field? Now add the compressor for air brakes and the ability to hitch a 5th wheel and now we can leave the semi at home and use the tractor to pull the trailer to the elevator at highway speeds!!
