USDA reported this morning that dairy producers sent 238,000 cows to slaughter through Federally inspected plants in April. That’s 3,000 head more than a year ago, but 30,000 fewer than in March.
Year-to-date, 1.096 million dairy cows have been slaughtered, a 16% increase over 2010. Strong beef prices and lots of heifers waiting to move into the milking string are likely reasons.
