Farmers Feeding the World Commits $1 Million to Heifer International

The Farm Journal Foundation announced its Farmers Feeding the World campaign’s largest single commitment to date, with a $1 million grant to Heifer International. Through the Foundation’s commitment to Heifer, the organizations will identify communities in both the U.S. and developing countries that would significantly benefit from the gift of livestock, and training in animal husbandry and basic smallholder farming practices.

DuPont Seeks to Find Food Security Solutions

The world’s population continues to grow and, as it does, food production must grow as well. DuPont is committed to finding food security solutions to the tune of $10 billion. At a food forum in Washington D.C., hosted by DuPont, executives shared their plan to help end hunger around the globe.The company also announced its pledge of $10 billion to be used in research and development, dedicated to global hunger solutions. USDA Announces Record U.S. Farm Exports for 2011

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said that total agriculture exports for the calendar year 2011 were “a robust $136.3 billion” in a statement regarding data released on Feb. 10, 2012. In addition, value and volume of U.S. agriculture exports around the world increased he said. “International sales rose $20.5 billion over the previous record set in calendar year 2010,” Vilsack said.. Vilsack Defends Obama Budget Plan
Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack defended President Obama’s USDA budget plan for FY 2013 earlier this month, calling the proposed plan “a stable budget.” The amount of the discretionary spending at $23 billion for FY 2013 is roughly the same as 2011, he said. The proposal outlines $32 billion in savings from mandatory spending by eliminating direct payments and reducing crop insurance subsidies and conservation funding while increasing investments in research and alternative energy. Music Artist 50 Cent 'Inspired' by Trip to Horn of Africa
The World Food Programme (WFP) has been hosting music artist Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson during his trip this week to Somalia and Kenya, where he was able to see firsthand the fight against hunger in the Horn of Africa. In September, Jackson made a public commitment to provide one billion meals for the hungry. As part of his fundraising drive, he is donating to WFP money from the sales of a new energy drink called Street King. For every unit sold, he has pledged to donate one meal for a hungry child. US-China to Sign a Five-year Agriculture Pact to Focus on Food Safety, Food Security and Sustainability
China’s Vice President and soon-to-be-leader, Xi Jinping, wrapped up his four-day U.S. trip on Feb. 16. As with his previous travels, Xi Jinping was focusing on forging relationships. Xi spent the morning in Iowa, where officials from the U.S. and China signed a five-year deal to guide discussions on food security, food safety and sustainable agriculture. China became the top market for U.S. agricultural goods last year, purchasing $20 billion in U.S. agricultural exports, according to USDA. Read More.
