Thanks for your article on microbes and nitrogen availability (The Nitrogen Balancing Act). This is the first serious, yet very practical discussion I have seen on this subject since my advanced soil fertility course with Prof. Fredricksen at (then) Iowa State College of Science and Technology back in 1957. That course's unit on microbial action was the toughest in the course, but was very interesting.
As a family farmer in Southern Iowa I have often wondered about the interplay of fertilizers and pesticides with the soil's biotic community. Your article gives some clues! Keep up the good work! For me, your article puts the science, the art, the fundamental stewardship back into farming!
