Integrated Refuge Products Make Meeting Refuge Requirements Simple

The National Corn Growers Association 2012 refuge compliance results found that the percentage of farmers not planting any refuge acres is now less than 10 percent, down from 16 percent in 2011. Included for the first time in this survey were farmers using integrated refuge products, with 50 percent of farmers surveyed indicating that they had planted an integrated refuge product.

With corn rootworm pressure rising and concern over continued efficacy of current corn rootworm technologies, planting refuge acres is a critical part of any management plan. A strong stewardship program is essential for protecting and preserving the long-term value of trait technology. It ensures that farmers have choices in combatting pests like corn rootworm right now, next season and into the future.
Refuge compliance is not only a responsibility to technology preservation, but also a legal requirement. The EPA requires a refuge on every farm that plants corn hybrids. Failing to meet refuge requirements puts farmers at risk of losing access to insect traits, should the EPA find non-compliance.
Integrated refuge products make compliance simple and help farmers avoid confusion concerning how much refuge is required. This allows farmers to comply with stewardship agreements easily and go through the planting process with the utmost convenience. Agrisure Duracade™, the newest corn rootworm trait offering from Syngenta, will only be sold as part of two trait stacks available as a 5 percent integrated, single-bag refuge product – Agrisure Duracade 5122 E-Z Refuge® and Agrisure Duracade 5222 E-Z Refuge – providing convenience and maximizing future effectiveness of this new technology.
