We skipped watching the Grammy award show earlier this month and we admit we’d be hard pressed to name a single performer nominated for an award.
Yeah, we’re old, but we have heard of a young Brit with an astounding voice who stumbled through her performance of “All I Ask.” Adele apparently sought refuge after the show at a local “In-N-Out Burger, the chain of 305 restaurants now squarely in Food Babe’s crosshairs. Yep, Food Babe’s still promoting bogus campaigns against food companies and hawking her “investigations” that reveal the “toxins” they put in their food.
In-N-Out is a regional chain, found in southwestern states. Its menu is small – they serve three burger varieties: hamburger, cheeseburger, and "Double-Double" – double the meat and double the cheese. So what has Food Babe’s knickers in a knot? In-N-Out’s meat comes from “factory farms” that use antibiotics and hormones. And the fries? They’re “submerged and fried in GMO cottonseed oil.” The burgers are served on “buns made with fully hydrogenated soy bean oil and sugar beets likely from crops treated with Monsanto’s Roundup herbicide.” Yeah, “likely” is one of those words that suggest the investigation was minimal. Blogger Jenny Splitter (who rejects anti-science lunacy) thinks the Food Babe Army is “nuts.”
Eating Like a Caveman Causes Diabetes?
There has been a recent diet trend where people try to harken back to our cave dwelling days called the Paleo diet. To be Paleo you typically stray from processed foods, alcohol, dairy and starches by eating mainly fruits, vegetables, lean meat, nuts and seeds.
According to an Australian study, eating like a caveman may be bad for your health and it might cause diabetes. Researchers fed one group of overweight mice a low-carb, high-fat diet and another control group their normal diet. The “Paleo” mice gained 15% of their bodyweight in eight weeks.
This new study is quite the opposite of findings from Swedish researchers earlier in the decade who determined type 2 diabetes could be controlled with a Paleo diet.
We’ll see how long it takes the researches to sort this out. Until then we’ll stick to the Ron Swanson diet.
Subway’s Relationship with Farmers is Complicated
Subway had a lot of farmers and ranchers upset this past fall when the fast food chain announced the elimination of antibiotics from U.S. meat supplies. The company backed off those claims after outcry from livestock producers. Now, it seems, Subway has reversed their stance again saying all meat will come from livestock raised without antibiotics by 2025. The move would put Subway in the same club as chains like Chipotle Mexican Grill and Panera Bread, both of which claim to use meat from never-ever treated livestock.
Consumers can get ready for their food prices to increase and the company has already started making the move by promoting $6 footlongs in February.
It sounds like the $5 footlong has died, much like sick animals will since Subway doesn’t want farmers and ranchers to treat with antibiotics.
China Edits Livestock and Plant Breeding Competition
In the U.S., a number of companies have been working to develop gene editing, but the competition is more stacked than an Olympics event since the Chinese government stepped in the race.
According to Bloomberg, China has been using the genetic tool known as Crispr to help breed lean pigs and muscular dogs. The technology could be harnessed to produce higher quality meat and disease resistant grains.
