Don’t want to eat vegetarian? Don’t break the law, at least not in Maricopa County, Ariz. Sheriff Joe Arpiao has built a national reputation as tough on crime and not-so-nice to perpetrators, but he’s getting plenty of criticism for his latest executive order. He’s now feeding vegetarian meals to prisoners, which seems to be cruel and unusual punishment. Mostly, though, we’re disappointed Sheriff Joe brought in aging Playboy playmate and PETA spokesperson Pamela Anderson for a publicity event about the prisoners meat-free fare.

A Litter Of Calves

Last month a cow in Northeast Texas gave birth to four – count ‘em – four calves, and at last check they were all alive one month later. What are the odds? Local veterinarian Mike Baird says the odds of four live births from one cow are 1 in 11.2 million. Jimmy Barling and his wife, Dora Rumsey-Barling, say the cow is nursing one calf while the other three are being bottle-fed.

Vegan Cheeseheads

It’s a sacrifice vegans must make – giving up real cheese. Oh there’s vegan cheeses made from plants, but they usually have the taste and texture of that other substance that comes from the south end of a north-bound cow. Vegans may soon rejoice, however, as an Oakland, Calif., lab is developing “Real Vegan Cheese.” Oxymoron? The folks at Counter Culture Labs say no, because they are using mail-order DNA to trick yeast cells into producing a substance that’s molecularly identical to milk. From there they’ll make cheese. Sounds a lot like GMO cheese to us.
