Together over the last several years, we've learned a lot about succession and family business. What follows are 10 thoughts we should keep in mind as we engage in the succession planning process. The act of planning and implementation is a life-changing progression. It begins with commitment and really never ends. It will affect everyone involved and touch every corner of your life. A succession plan signals to all that we intend to achieve multigenerational success. It is a declaration that we will create a lasting legacy.
Thoughts on planning for success:
- Pride in accomplishment is a building block for confidence.
- Self-importance is conceit. It is damaging to all relationships.
- Others will follow your lead. They're watching; they always have and always will.
- Waiting to respond is a lot different than listening to learn.
- No single personal can possibly know it all, and that's OK.
- Leadership is not based on age, gender, role, generation, or authority.
- If it's not written, it's not real. That applies to goals, plans, roles, responsibilities, etc.
- Acknowledge the person speaking, clarify their concerns and then react.
- Giving the benefit of doubt is the basis for constructive conversations. Others really do care as much as you do.
Planning for succession is a journey, not a destination. Legacy is the unwritten chapter in your book. How do you want the story to go?
