Nicest John Deere 4440 Tractors Bring Big Money
Apr 01, 2016
Let's talk John Deere 4440's. The really nice ones.
I know the trend, you know the trend. They have been bringing big $$ at auction for quite a few years now. Made by Deere from 1978 - 1982, the 130 HP tractors still get the job done all over the farm, but they are also now beginning to be sought after as classic tractors to collect. (11) 4440's have sold for $30,000 or more at auction in just the past 15 months, so basically in a tough, profit challenged ag environment.
There was a lot of "chatter" about 4440's this past week. The tractor pictured above was a big reason why. The 1981 model 4440 with 4,135 hours, PS, 1 owner, always shedded, sold for $33,000 on a farm estate auction Thursday (March 31, 2016) in south-central Nebraska. Another coal to the 4440 chatter fire this week was Kinze Manufacturing announcing it is now featuring founder/owner Jon Kinzenbaw's prize 1982 John Deere 4440 with only 50 actual hours on it up front in their beautiful "Kinze Innovations Center" in Williamsburg, IA. Here's a pic of it....wow:
Jon Kinzenbaw bought this tractor on a March 6, 2009 farm estate auction in Hamilton, IL, a sale by my friends at Sullivan Auctioneers (http://www.sullivanauctioneers.com). At the time it had just 47 hours on it. The most amazing auction I have ever covered. Here's a pic from that day....the 4440 is the 1st of (3) in the picture. It sold for $58,000, still a record high auction sale price:
Here was the "Rest of the Story" regarding this 4440 and this auction I posted on our Machinery Pete Facebook page this week in the discussion thread on the post about Jon's 4440:
"REST OF THE STORY....for those not familiar, here's the scoop on the 1982 JD 4440 with only 47 actual original hours that sold on Hamilton, IL farm estate auction back on 3/6/09. The owner (Wayne Crooks) had oil on his land and Wayne was an excellent (very) negotiator. He got the oil company in TX to buy him a new line of JD farm equipment to win the mineral rights. They agreed. Wayne actually got (3) 1982 JD 4440 tractors (all seen in the auction pic from 3/6/09) a 1982 JD 7720 combine and I also remember a White 6100 planter. But basically Wayne just NEVER USED THIS STUFF and shedded it all. He just kept on being the same guy he always was, overalls every day, simple life. When he passed away word began to spread about his line of equipment. I remember blogging about the 4440 with 47 hours and.....folks around the country (world) just couldn't believe it was true....but it was. His neighbors chimed in on my blogs and told Wayne's story. I went down to Hamilton, IL the day before the auction and, my goodness, I've never seen anything like it. There were SO many folks already there, from EVERYWHERE. So much speculation about how high the 4440 with 47 hours would go. On sale sale when the Sullivan Auctioneers truck rolled around in front of the (3) 4440's.......it got so quiet. Unbelievable actually. The other 2 4440's sold for $51,000 and $43,000. And the 1982 JD 7720 with hardly any hours on it sold for $50,000. Not sure I'll ever seen another auction quite like that one. So much fun. And what's really interesting to me is that this was March of 2009, so social media hadn't taken off yet. I made the 5 hour drive home to Rochester, MN that day and the drive seemed like it took 10 minutes.....because I KNEW I had to find a way to start pushing hard on the Facebook/Youtube/Twitter front....to tell more stories, to share more pics & prices....to more fully serve the farm audience. So this 3/6/09 auction in Hamilton, IL was really the start, the impetus for Machinery Pete Facebook page, Twitter feed and Machinery Pete Youtube videos......thanks everyone for following along all these years. It's been a blast! Can't wait to see what tomorrow brings :-)
Here a few other John Deere 4440 tractors I've seen sold for high prices at auction recently:
1981 model with 4,218 hours, QR, sold: $36,750 on 3/5/16 farm auction, northeast Kansas
1981 model, shows 2,571 hours, 2nd owner, sold $28,000 on 3/10/16 farm auction in north-central Michigan
1982 & 1981 models, restored, 8,161 & 5,720 hours, sold for $28,500 each on 1/23/16 dealer auction in east-central Indiana
Year?, 4,733 hours, sold for $32,000 on 10/28/15 farm auction, northeast North Dakota
4,700 hours, w/ KD 5500 loader: $39,750, 4/18/15 farm sale, southwest Okla.
If I had to look ahead and try to predict the future...my guess would be that these very nice condition John Deere 4440 tractors will continue to be highly sought after and continue to attract very strong bidding action to acquire them. Can't wait to find the next sweet 4440 out there somewhere.
