Nearly 60% of farmers have yet to buy seed, according to a recent Farm Journal Pulse.
Have you started crunching your 2014 crop mix? Are your inputs booked? An early November Farm Journal Pulse provides some insight the questions.
More than 1,400 farmers shared their seed buying plans, answering the question: What % of your 2014 seed needs have you booked or purchased?
Slightly more than 40% had booked or purchased none of their seed, while 24% had all of their seed needs.
Here are the full results:
- None: 42%
- 1-25% booked: 9%
- 26-50% booked: 7%
- 51-75% booked: 8%
- 76-99% booked: 10%
- 100% booked: 24%
Last year, on Sept. 20, the Farm Journal Pulse polled farmers with the question: When do you plan to purchase your seed corn hybrids for 2013 crop? Results from 1,400 votes showed the majority of seed purchases happen in the fall or before January.
Here are the full results to when farmers said they planned to purchase seed:
- September: 17%
- October: 22%
- November: 25%
- December: 22%
- January: 7%
- February: 8%
While the 2012 Farm Journal Pulse only addressed corn seed, it still seems, in comparing the two sets of results, farmers are a little more gun-shy about purchasing seed this year.
Luckily, seed supply seems to be strong for 2014, according to many companies. Read: Companies Report Good Seed Corn Supply and Quality for 2014
